That was a great catch but the next one was just as good.  Such a great talent.

This state has a long history of sending great players to South Bend, but it's pretty cool to say that the greatest tight end in Notre Dame history was born and bred here. The significance of that might be lost on younger generations that only know ND for being overhyped and a lightning rod for criticism. But blood doesn't run any bluer than Notre Dame's and Mayer is historically great there.

Mayer got absolutely robbed of the Mackey Award last night.  Probably one of those things that angers fans more than it does him, but still, hate to see it.

Besides leading in just about every statistical category, and being a superior blocker, one stat that really says it all:

Mackey Award Finalists against AP Top 25 opponents:

Mayer: 31 REC, 346 yds, 5 TDs

Bowers: 5 REC, 65 yds, 0 TDs

LaPorta: 11 REC, 79 yds, 0 TDs

Also thought this was interesting that Mayer won the weekly top TE award 3 weeks (weeks 4, 6, &8) and Bowers on won the weekly award once (week 3).

How many games did each play against top 25 teams?

At the time the games occurred ND faced 5 ranked opponents and UGA faced 3.  According to the final playoff rankings is 3 for ND and 5 for UGA.  These stats appear to be based on the former.
