  • People annoy me with "tradition." Who cares if it is normally played in March? Things aren't normal right now. Move the tournament wherever it needs to be moved in order for the season to be played.

  • To keep the Sweet 16 in March because of “tradition” and to accommodate spring sports is idiotic. We have to be real here and admit that basketball is the bloodline financially for the KHSAA. Playing

  • I agree Mustang. My take on Commissioner Tackett was one of "subdued exasperation."  I think some of the board members were too self absorbed with their own interests and failed to pick up w

I completely understand attendance restrictions in basketball gyms, and out of state travel restrictions for tournaments.  However, I'll be very disappointed in the KHSAA simply cancels the season.  I don't believe the virus poses a greater risk to these athletes, than the risks of not playing.  These athletes need to exercise, run, jump, compete, experience teamwork, etc.  Let's join with Indiana to our north, and Tennessee to our south to offer sound guidance to the teams, while playing safely.

I have said it before that schools should be thinking outside the box and start getting streaming equipment to stream games so all the grandparents and the ones  that cant get tickets ...we have to think about all the SRs that's gonna be missing out on the spotlight they have been working hard for and be playing in empty gyms this year can be different but its free to stream on facebook it could be a great revenue  stream for athletics too as sponsors would hop on the cause. But I don't think this year should be cancelled but just make adujustments a lot of SRs of class of 2020 missed out on their opportunity to have a change to win a title some didn't get to go play ball in college and these SRs cant be seen if schools don't help out to get them noticed coaches isn't recruiting in person don't even know if that even allowed anymore we just have to adapt to change and pray it gets better so the kids can play

It's making streaming a real big deal....Pegasus Sports will be real busy in the 8th Region, covering the boys' and girls' from Oldham County, North Oldham, and South Oldham, and focusing on games against 8th Region opponents.

As always, we'll also cover every game in the boys'/girls' 29th district tourney and the boys'/girls' 8th Region tourneys.

Busy year

Jason Frakes is reporting that most coaches are expecting the start of the season to be delayed, perhaps until the start of the new year.

Note that all the coaches Frakes quoted are from Fayette or Jefferson County public schools.  Those districts don't appear to want to fully open sports anytime soon.

I see a dark winter for all sports in the Bluegrass state!

Basketball to start 1-4-21 at this point, not a definite but that looks like where we are headed.

That is the "recommendation" by the Commish at this point in time.

The "good news" on basketball is the KHSAA is freely admitting basketball is the "cash cow" and the powers that be definitely want to play basketball this season.

Here are the teams that I saw who had already delayed starts to basketball. I'm sure there were some more than this.

Bellevue (Delayed thru 11/30)
Boone County (Delayed thru 11/30)
Conner (Delayed thru 11/30)
Cooper (Delayed thru 11/30)
Covington Holy Cross (Delayed thru 11/30)
Central Hardin (Delayed thru 11/30)
John Hardin (Delayed thru 11/30)
North Hardin (Delayed thru 11/30)
Ryle (Delayed thru 11/30)

As I hear more members talk in the meeting today it is clear to me that the powers that be are desperate to have basketball this season, it sounds like the prime directive.

They do not have consensus on what to do with the basketball season.  They do mostly appear to agree to shoot for a 1-4-21 start but many of the members are bringing up reason after reason why they want the Sweet 16® to be held in March like normal instead of what the Commish is recommending on having the Sweet 16® right before the Derby.

January 4th being floated around as a start date.

Honestly I feel like Commissioner Tackett is one of the few adults in the room here.

Truth. And fair or not, I'd imagine no Sweet Sixteen for a second straight season probably means to soccer, volleyball, cross country, track, swimming, tennis, etc. ever again.
