This quarterfinal features a pairing of the 5A finalists from two years ago, when Covington Catholic laid it on Madison Southern 49-13 to claim the 2017 5A title. The programs have followed different paths since that game, with CovCath remaining among the state's elite and MadSouth struggling through a 2-9 season in 2018 and enduring some ups and downs this year. What matters most right now, is that the Eagles (7-5) are enjoying an "up" period at the right time, winning their district over East Jessamine.

As they continue upward, a ceiling rapidly approaches. It's a barrier painted blue, as in CovCath blue. The Colonels (12-0) survived their only wire to wire challenge this season against Lexington Catholic, and have been in lockdown mode ever since, allowing just 39 points total over their last nine games.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold, and this dish has been on ice for two years. Can Madison Southern spring what would be the biggest upset in Kentucky in recent memory, or will CovCath ground the Eagles in a flashback performance from their previous meeting?

CCH by a running clock by halftime as usual. Then they will bench all starters and MS may score a late TD against CCH Jv team.

Madison Southern in an upset 28-27. It's not likely, but stranger things have happened.

That CovCath Stat is baffling. Wow. I didn’t know their defense was that good. Give me CovCath by 35.

I thought the Madison Southern team a couple of years ago was pretty solid and better than that final score would indicate.

However, this one is almost certainly a running clock game, the only question is at what point in the game.

Not a lot of them.

CovCath spins the clock before intermission.

Ditto to everyone. CovCath is a monster this year and I’m not sure there is anything Madison can do against the Colonels.

CovCath picks the score. Starters get some rest.

Who are MS key players and main contributors?

Tobias Storm is a double threat at quarterback. Storm has rushed for 700 yards and passed for over 1500 with 25 combined touchdowns.

AJ Jones has rushed for 1,327 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Walt Smith has 853 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.

Levi Benton and Clay Bunch are the leading tacklers.

MadSouth is a physical team. CovCath will need to be prepared for that style of play.

Will be interesting to see if a big and talented running team is able to do that on the ground against a Colonel team that has been other-worldly good at stopping the run.

Colonels are mostly healthy and ready for Friday: we expect a hard fought game.

Question for CovCath fans (and just trying to get a feel for this and not threadjack), should CovCath be "fortunate" to advance this Friday, don't NKY teams (specifically CovCath and Highlands) like to try to schedule afternoon games the day after Thanksgiving? I was just wondering if anyone might have any insight into that potential semi-final game and when it might be played.

Thanks very much!

CovCath 57-2 per the poll.
