I am saying I think this Highlands team is a little better than they were the last couple of years but overall Highlands is down, by a lot.

 

Curious why you think they are better this year than say last. They were 10-3 last year I believe and lost in round three of playoffs. Offense was not near as bad as it currently is. Defense includes many of those that played last year quite a bit.

 

The program is always going to appear way down if you compare to the years of Dale.

 

I still think the biggest issue is the reluctance to use your BEST players on both sides of the ball number 1. There also needs to be a better evaluation of the talent you have and adjusting the schemes to get the most out of that talent.

 

Lastly, there needs to be a long hard look at the staff and make sure that ALL guys are on the same page and have the same goals/ideas in mind. To me the Head Coach should be making all personnel decisions and not position coaches.

Just curious, does NKY have some kids that cross the river and play for GCL-South teams? I know St.X and Trinity get a few kids from Southern Indiana.

Ohio does not allow out of state students to play sports.

OHSAA won't insure out-of-state kids, and therefore, you can't live in KY (or any other non-Ohio state) and play sports in Ohio.

Ohio does permit home-schooled kids from playing in their district (residential) public school...where does KY fall on that issue?

Let's say hypothetically that by the end of the season, NCC wins 1A, Beechwood wins 2A, and CovCath wins 5A and overall NKY wins 3 of the 6 class state titles. Does this change your perception of NKY being down? Or to the others point does it just mean football is down all over?

I am questioning whether "we" are seeing a permanent change for the worse in Kentucky high school football.

 

In other words, a few good teams here and there and everyone else pretty much stinks.

I hear what you are saying but wherever we were in the past I think we are down from there now.

Most of us on BGP that follow along know that Highlands is a 4A team that opted to play up into 5A for the 2019-2022 time period.

 

So, this actually means that Highlands got blanked by a team of similar size. It also means that maybe Highlands was right (at least this year) to move up to 5A since they are obviously not good enough to win 4A.

 

However, I would be shocked, if Highlands wins 5A.

 

And since this is a thread about NKY football I do believe Highlands is down too over the Mueller years but they are probably up slightly for a Highlands team in the Weinrich years.

 

I don't think Highlands is quite near the level of CovCath but do feel that game will be entertaining to watch just for the defensive reasons. CovCath will keep Highlands defense on the field too long and simply overpower them.

NK football is never down, just slight hiccup on occasional years.

I've always found it challenging to consider Northern Kentucky football "up", given the level of play across the river and within our own metro area. While I completely understand the population north of the river is over 8x that Northern Kentucky, hard to get all excited about a really good Beechwood, CovCath, or Highlands team when you know there are 10 teams (50 if you include Beechwood, just due to size) within 15 or 20 miles that would bury them.

 

I think it changes your lens for teams in the rest of Kentucky when the best local H.S. teams are literally the best teams in the area....never the case in NKY given they are part of the Greater Cincinnati area.

 

To the thread point directly, when Ryle is (maybe) the 4th best team in NKY and I watched another team from NKY beat them 37-0 (or thereabouts), yes, NKY football is way down.

 

Good point. NKY is the "small market" local to their region.

My take is that there are still good teams and a few very good teams in the state, but overall I think Kentucky high school football is currently down statewide.

Beechwood has played teams in the past from Ohio and beat them. They lost to Taft this year 7-3 and could easily have beat them. They have beat Ironton and Lima fairly recently. Beechwood is down this year but would have no problem competing in Ohio against similar size schools. They would never compete with the big schools obviously but would be fine against D3 and lower.
