Northern Kentucky football is down, right?

Featured Replies

Beechwood lost to Paintsville and then lost by 32 to Somerset. Beechwood doesn't win state if they can't beat Somerset.

Simon Kenton got pounded by Johnson Central. Good 6A teams shouldn't lose by 38 to good 4A teams.

Highlands got blanked by Boyle County. Good 5A teams shouldn't be handed a 30 point shut out by a good 4A team.

Cooper got beaten by DeSales. One of the bigger 5A teams shouldn't be losing 40-7 to one of the smallest 3A teams.

CovCath almost lost to LexCath. CovCath only barely came back to win, but a good 5A team shouldn't be having to "come back" to get a last minute score to win against a good 4A team.

My take is that there are still good teams and a few very good teams in the state, but overall I think Kentucky high school football is currently down statewide.

I've always found it challenging to consider Northern Kentucky football "up", given the level of play across the river and within our own metro area. While I completely understand the population north of the river is over 8x that Northern Kentucky, hard to get all excited about a really good Beechwood, CovCath, or Highlands team when you know there are 10 teams (50 if you include Beechwood, just due to size) within 15 or 20 miles that would bury them.

I think it changes your lens for teams in the rest of Kentucky when the best local H.S. teams are literally the best teams in the area....never the case in NKY given they are part of the Greater Cincinnati area.

To the thread point directly, when Ryle is (maybe) the 4th best team in NKY and I watched another team from NKY beat them 37-0 (or thereabouts), yes, NKY football is way down.

All this is telling us is football is down in a lot of areas.

All of those NKY teams on the above list are average at best with Beechwood maybe being slightly above average.

Right, football is currently down statewide and the larger question is this a trend that will continue in the years to come?

That is rhetorical question, right?

I am questioning whether "we" are seeing a permanent change for the worse in Kentucky high school football.

In other words, a few good teams here and there and everyone else pretty much stinks.

Covcath plays LaSalle next week so I guess we will find out soon enough. But I agree, NKY football is down and will never compare to Cincinnati talent. I feel like St.X, Elder, Colerain Moeller, LaSalle always have 3-5 players going on to power 5 colleges. Cov Cath got Mayer but that's the biggest athlete to ever come out of that school.

Yeah, sorry, I understood your question...given the thousands of conversations occurring all over the place about participation being way down, and fewer parents letting their kids play football, I think we have to believe this is a trend and not an aberration. The more the numbers decrease, the water level for everyone will have to drop along with it.

Agree and I am pretty certain that is where we are headed.

How sad.

Furthermore, the parents/kids that still want to play will want to play for a winner and I think that will further exacerbate the downward trend for most schools/teams.

Is it okay if the Birds got blanked by a Great 4A team? :idunno:

Most of us on BGP that follow along know that Highlands is a 4A team that opted to play up into 5A for the 2019-2022 time period.

So, this actually means that Highlands got blanked by a team of similar size. It also means that maybe Highlands was right (at least this year) to move up to 5A since they are obviously not good enough to win 4A.

However, I would be shocked, if Highlands wins 5A.

And since this is a thread about NKY football I do believe Highlands is down too over the Mueller years but they are probably up slightly for a Highlands team in the Weinrich years.

Care to elaborate a little more on your last paragraph? I have some thoughts but interested to hear what you have to say.

I am saying I think this Highlands team is a little better than they were the last couple of years but overall Highlands is down, by a lot.
