6A Notebook: The Big Eight

The top eight teams of 6A were victorious in the opening week. They were especially unkind to the Hoosier state with Trinity defeating Indianapolis power Carmel, Male defeating Floyd Central, and Fern Creek defeating Jeffersonville. Even unranked Henderson County defeated Evansville Reitz. The two teams that lost, lost to respectable opponents with Butler losing to the 5A defending State Champs South Warren, and McCracken County losing to cross town rival 3A #7 Paducah Tilghman in a high scoring game. Saint Xavier got revenge for last year’s loss against 3A #2 DeSales in front of a packed house of 7,500. Ballard cruised against 5A Doss and North Hardin cruised against 5A Waggener. Last but not least, Manual scraped out a victory against the defending 3A State Champs in Central who is now in 4A, and who take pride in what they call “the dark side defense”.

 

1. Trinity rolled over Indianapolis Carmel 41-14 avenging last year’s 3 point loss to them. Trinity QB Nathan McElroy led the way by throwing for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns. RB Armon Tucker had 2 touchdowns and 53 yards rushing. WR Ryan Miller led the receivers with 94 yards and 1 touchdown. The defense played well holding Carmel to 14 points. Next up for Trinity is at Indianapolis power Warren Central.

 

2. Male once again opened by defeating Floyd Central (IN) with an aerial assault between QB Elijah Parish and University of Kentucky commit WR Izayah Cummings. They connected for 177 yards and 4 touchdowns. The defense held Floyd Central to 13 points with one of the scores near the end of game where the outcome was not in doubt.

 

3. Saint Xavier had last year’s loss to DeSales on the mind and avenged it with a 38-7 win in front of an estimated 7,500 crowd, which was the 2nd largest in stadium history. QB Doug Bodhaine passed for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns. WR Elijah Byrne caught two touchdowns and WR Michael Duddy caught one touchdown. WR Mekhi Smith hauled in 3 passes for 89 yards. The defense gave up a touchdown on the opening drive but shut down DeSales after that. Next up for Saint Xavier is Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic.

 

4. Simon Kenton played without starting RB Austin Hammack but the offense still rolled up 38 points and a 38-27 win over Henry Clay. RB Eric Brown ran for a stat stuffing 198 yards. QB Chase Crone added 50 yards throwing and 1 touchdown pass and ran for 60 yards. Jack Milton led defense with 8 tackles. The defense also racked up 4 interceptions. Next up for Simon Kenton is Anderson (OH) at home.

 

5. North Hardin had no problems in dispatching 4A Waggener 48-14. North Hardin was led by RB Lavell Wright amassing 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. QB Logan Coleman got a big start to the season throwing 5 touchdowns. The defense held Waggener to just 8 points at the half and gave up one other score when the win was not in doubt. Next up for North Hardin is at 3A #6 Elizabethtown.

 

6. Manual [/b]clawed out a 7-0 victory over 4A #6 Central by scoring the only score of the game in the 3rd quarter by LB/RB JuWaun Northington. The Manual defense held Central out of the end zone and held them to 230 yards. This score was not surprising considering both these schools are known for good defense. Next up for Manual is at #8 Fern Creek.

 

7. Ballard had no trouble in this 50-8 tune up win over 5A Doss. University of Louisville commit led the way with 3 touchdowns and one of them was a kickoff return. Next up for Ballard is at #2 Male.

 

8. Fern Creek crossed the bridge into Jeffersonville (IN) and defeated the Red Devils 25-6. Fern Creek racked up 286 yards of offense and held Jeffersonville to 86 yards. Fern Creek returned several defensive starters so this dominant defensive performance is not surprising.

 

9. Butler played the defending 5A State Champions, 5A #5 South Warren, in Bowling Green and came up short in a 33-20 loss. QB Chaz Burks led Butler with 211 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. He also ran for 96 yards and 1 touchdown. University of Kentucky commit Tyrell Watkins caught 6 passes for 154 yards and 1 touchdown. LB Samuel Porter led the defense with 12 tackles. Next up for Butler is at 3A #2 DeSales.

 

10. McCracken County played an exciting game with cross town rival 3A #7 Paducah Tilghman but came up short with a 47-43 loss. McCracken County started the game out in a hole and down 14-0. They clawed backed and had a halftime lead of 23-21. A good Paducah Tilghman team took advantage of McCracken County’s youth on defense and and amassed 47 points and held of a late come back attempt by McCracken County with the final result a 47-43 defeat of the Mustangs. Next up for McCracken County is 5A #6 Bowling Green at home.
