He needs to be gone if he got physical in any way with a player.

If I am a billionaire owner you better believe that my mindset says that I own every person in that organization and if anyone had a problem with it I’d buy a better version of you.

 

So sorry to hear this statement ever being said. Candidly I find it shocking that one could ever be so insensitive in today's world to think that because they are rich they can treat others so cavalierly. We own businesses, not the people that freely choose to work for that business.

I used to find it shocking that people could be so insensitive in today’s world but once you experience enough insensitivity from the rich and powerful you’ll adapt. This mindset is prevalent everywhere in today’s society. Especially amongst the rich and powerful. Look at this thread. I’m guessing no one in this thread is rich but I sure don’t see much sensitivity. If this is what folks who aren’t rich are saying what do you think the rich people are saying?

The ironic thing about this situation is that it is the NBA having this discussion and not the NFL. I think the NFL owners treat their players much more like "interchangeable drill bits" than NBA owners do. I think the relationship between NBA owners and NBA players is much better than between NFL owners and NFL players. The NBA seems to be much more of a partnership between owners and players than the NFL does. Maybe that is why the NBA is even considering this. If this gets traction, do NFL and MLB "owners" follow suit?

It is definitely different, though much of that is because the NFL union is an absolute joke and the players are much more vital to the NBA’s success. Keep giving up power to the owners and that is what happens. PP is right in that Silver seems to be attempting to strike the right balance.

 

Before we sing the NBA praises too much, this league kept Donald Sterling around for decades - a known bigot - and did nothing until it was unavoidable.

I really enjoy reading threads like this on BGP, even if I don't contribute much to them. It's hard to find good dialogue on certain topics, even on here because too often they eventually get shut down. I wish we could have more of these because its a great opportunity to learn a few things, as well as see another perspective.

I've never really understood the professional athlete/slavery comparison and maybe I never will. But, I think calling them CEO's as suggested seems like a good change to me.

 

If you told me any of the major sports were thinking about this, I would have definitely guessed it was the NBA. They seem much more progressive on things. I think that's in large part because the players seem to feel a little more empowered to have a voice.

Me too everyone but the reality is too many members refuse to follow our Terms of Service in threads like this and that is a long term loser for BGP.

Sure, but the fan that actually got the brawl pulled into the stands by throwing his drink at Artest is banned from NBA games for life.
