Beechwood 28 Simon Kenton 21

Featured Replies

32 schools in 6a. Only two, maybe 3 have a chance to win a state title, year in, year out. Yet SK gets beat up on this board year after year for "scheduling", program direction etc. What about the other almost 30 6a teams, most of which aren't as good as SK year in and year out? I'm not an SK apologist, or fan (in fact I'm far from it), but man, they have to be the favorite target for people to take shots at on BGP.

I agree. Simon Kenton could go 10-0 versus 4A, 5A and 6A teams and there would still be gripes because they didn't play the teams other people think they should have played.

Years ago, people gripped because they were a 6A team and were not good, now they win games but they are winning against "the wrong teams". Simon Kenton has build a good program, let them continue to grow.

Personally, I think people get upset when a non-traditional program becomes more relevant. Some want the traditional power to continue to win and the non-traditional programs to struggle. People are more comfortable with that homeostasis.

And, for the record, how many 6A teams could Beechwood beat this year? How many 6A teams could the 2A top three beat this year? People hate to admit it, but, for the most part, the size of the school does not matter as much as many like to think it does.

I don't disagree. I get when Marksberry was building the program why he scheduled the way he did. But the Pioneers have reached the point they shouldn't be playing Class A or AA schools. They should be going across the river and playing a GCL team each year.

I think they are of the cusp of bigger things and have been. From the outside it appears have centered their game plan around play makers instead of kids that can make plays. When a defense only has to key on two or three guys it makes your job easier. Once they get 4-5 real threat players on each play, look out. Or maybe they already have them and they are not being utilized.

SK has some really good players but they are down at some positions this year. They lost the entire starting line from last year. and 8 wide receivers. It is what is. SK played Middletown 5 or 6 years ago and got blown out. SK will be fine they just have alot new starters this year things will get better.

That predictable, cookie cutter offense of Beechwood, put up 500 yards of offense last night.

I agree. My only gripe is that they have a very good run blocking line, but try to run the spread too much. When they went power in the 4th, with Hergott under center and a full back, they rammed it right down SK’s throat. They did the same early in the year and then got away from it against Corbin and Cov Cath.

Beechwood was using the fullback against Covington Catholic with success before Derry was injured. The Derry injury has impacted the power running game. They needed to get the new fullbacks up to speed and last night Corts and Donoho did a good job at fullback when Beechwood went to the I formation. You should see more of the running game from here on out.

Beechwood does a good job adapting the offense to what their players are good at. They are using quarterback running plays with Hergott because he can be a threat running. Burch was a very accurate and experienced passer and not a runner so Beechwood's passing offense was different last year than it is this year. I am sure it will grow as Hergott grows.

Beechwood does a good job using plays they run well a lot to set up a different little used play run out of a similar formation at the right time. Last night, the jet sweep play with Sherron running was a good wrinkle that the Tigers got a big play out of. The fake punt play was great. It was a different fake punt than what Beechwood usually runs. Beechwood executes their basic offense with multiple formations and will find what is working best then use it. It may look predictable to fans who have followed the program for years because you have seen it all regularly. It isn't as predictable to opponents. Beechwood waits for the right moment to put in the twist. The first touchdown pass to Castlemen is another good example of a twist at the right moment.

Since others are commenting on the officials I will comment and say I thought they were flag happy. That was the most penalties I can ever recall seeing in a Beechwood game. It seemed like they were looking for the smallest opportunity to throw a flag and called things very tight. I thought one of the worst calls of the night was the spot by the side judge on the Hergott fourth down run. He missed the spot by a full yard. It caused a turnover on downs by Beechwood at the Simon Kenton 30 late in the third quarter with Beechwood driving for the go ahead score.

Power ratings and my subjective vote would put Beechwood in Top 10 of 6A so not a shameful loss, although because Beechwood has 1A in front of their name it is perceived as not good. What class you play in is most overated consideration. Great programs get great players and can compete across all classes.

SK just lost to a 1A school and you're saying they need to go play GCL schools to get better. Yup, makes sense to me.

One step in the process.

I'm told they have the talent. Seems the miss is with the staff. If the staff is improved/replaced, the next step would be to toughen up the schedule. Play a team that will be like one of the Louisville giants they are bound to run into during the playoffs.

Or stay the same. Keep the coaches the same. Keep playing smaller school powers. And ever 5 or 6 years when the bracket lines up to keep the Louisville schools on the same side of the bracket, enjoy the runner up trophy.

I would like to see NKY schools compete in all classes. Doesn't seem like we are competing in 6A.

Clean house get a big time coach and change the attitude of the program. I don't have a kid or family at SK nor will I ever have a football player so no personal hate here just IMO

The old adage "be careful of what you ask for" creeps into mind when you talk about getting a "big name coach." It's doesn't seem to be working out for the folks in Union right now.

Good win for Beechwood that solidifies in my mind how good Beechwood is. Beechwood is senior dominated, two time state champions. They have a great back in Logan Castleman. I agree with the poster above that Beechwood could beat anyone outside the top 5 in 6A.

A high win total is more important to SK than competing for titles. They’ve made that obvious.

Everyone here knows exactly why SK gets criticism on this board.

If that’s the case, that’s not fair to SK or the program.
