Beechwood 28 Simon Kenton 21

This is a VERY GOOD Beechwood team. Not surprised at all.

I agree. My only gripe is that they have a very good run blocking line, but try to run the spread too much. When they went power in the 4th, with Hergott under center and a full back, they rammed it right down SK’s throat. They did the same early in the year and then got away from it against Corbin and Cov Cath.

Nice game to watch. SK was minus four starters I believe. Castleman is a very nice runningback.

Both very valid posts. This is one of the best Beechwood teams in recent memory, and Simon Kenton was without some starters due to injuries in the Highlands game last week...including one of their top two defenders in linebacker Clay Cogswell. Would have loved to see how this one went with both teams at 100%.

Not to disagree too much; but, I believe this Tiger team is a little thinner and are very vulnerableto key injuries. First BW team I have ever seen dressing only 40 on Friday nights.

I agree. Last year’s team is better than this year’s team. Mescher, Davis, and McKinney were huge losses that aren’t being replaced with this team. Yes, Castleman is a great runner, but now you lose him on the edge which leaves you very thin out there. The passing game is no where close to last year. Yes, the qb is young, but you don’t have the athletes on the edge. Last year you had Castleman, Odom, and Mescher on the edge. Those 3 were a threat the take it to the house every time they touched it. If this team would utilize the TE more, I think their passing game would improve drastically. I have yet to see Bolger drop a pass in the few that have been thrown to him, but I have yet to see him catch one over the middle. I’m not sure if I’ve seen more than 5 balls thrown over the middle all year.

It was kind of odd. They called at least three bad holding calls, one on a long kickoff return and two others after about 20 yard runs. On top of that they called two really bad personal foul calls, where the refs closest to the plays didn’t throw it but both times the ref right by the SK coach, and at least 20 yards from the play, threw the flag.

Agree that the officiating was a little suspect, both teams got flagged for phantom calls, the personal foul was not called by the two officials closest to the play but by the line judge. Thought that was a little odd, but I am not sure what area of the field each official is responsible for.

I don’t think they are thinner, they just have a very small sophmore class. They have 33 juniors and seniors. 16 seniors is the most they have had in a while. If they dressed the freshman they would have like 65 kids.

There needs to be major changes in the SK football program if they ever want to compete year in and out with talented teams.

If the goal is to win 8 or 9 regular seasons games a year, goal met.

If the goal it to actually compete for state championships, they have a lot of work to do. Are the people at SK happy with just winning regular season games?

I believe it is now past the point of just winning some regular season games. SK always has more that enough size speed and talent just need to get it to next level.

If the players are in place, how do they get to the next level? Coordinator changes? Head coaching change?

I agree. My only gripe is

Why gripe friend? It was a good game. The student section was strong, the parents came out in full support, we filled up our section and had over flow, the weather was nice, and we won a game against a bigger school that competed against us.

Clean house get a big time coach and change the attitude of the program. I don't have a kid or family at SK nor will I ever have a football player so no personal hate here just IMO

I don't disagree. I get when Marksberry was building the program why he scheduled the way he did. But the Pioneers have reached the point they shouldn't be playing Class A or AA schools. They should be going across the river and playing a GCL team each year.

32 schools in 6a. Only two, maybe 3 have a chance to win a state title, year in, year out. Yet SK gets beat up on this board year after year for "scheduling", program direction etc. What about the other almost 30 6a teams, most of which aren't as good as SK year in and year out? I'm not an SK apologist, or fan (in fact I'm far from it), but man, they have to be the favorite target for people to take shots at on BGP.

No issue there and agree a great night. Just think this Beechwood team will be at its best grounding and pounding the ball.
