That's hard to pull off with 10 minutes to negotiate. And the Giants wanted Barkley pretty bad. Gettleman basically said he wasn't interested in trade offers.

The Patriots didnt have enough ammo to move up. I dont see how they could have put together an offer anywhere close to what the Giants would have asked.

You are probably correct about NE not having trade bait to get to #2. There, apparently was some interest expressed to the Browns at #4 but only one team offered a 2019 first round pick. Of course, Dorsey knew Mayfield wouldn't be around at #4. Peter King, of SI, says his guess is that it was Arizona who said they were coming up to #4 for "one player and one player only, Baker Mayfield."

 

King also said he believes NE would have tried to move up to #6 or #7 if Mayfield fell there. He believes they had enough draft capital to move there from #23. Here's the quote:

Cleveland all of a sudden has a good wr core. Running back wise they are solid. It will depend on the o line, since Thomas retired. Cleveland is not far off. Especially if Mayfield ends up being a good qb. Qb has been their biggest problem since they came back to the nfl.

Receiving core: Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Corey Coleman, TE Njoku. They added Callaway in the draft. He is one of the most explosive players in the 2018 draft.

 

RBs: Carlos Hyde, Duke Jonhson, Nick Chubb -- that's a heck of a backfield.

 

QBs: Tyrod Taylor (very accurate, doesn't throw INTs, mobile, Baker Mayfield

 

O-Line: The strength of the team last year. Lost Joe Thomas. He will be hard to replace. They picked up a very good Olineman from Nevada. He may be able to play LT. They have more depth this year after trades and free agency.

 

Their offense suddenly has many weapons. This is a different Cleveland offense.

 

Defense: biggest need was a cover CB. They got the best in the draft--Ward. They added depth in the off-season to the secondary. Linebacking core is pretty solid. There are two really good pass rushers--Garret and Ogbah. They added a strong DE who can move inside and put pressure on the QB.

 

2018 is going to be an interesting season. I believe Cleveland has upgraded their team and it will translate to wins this season.

 

Hue Jackson's job depends on it.
