Johnson Central 35 Ashland 7

Featured Replies

I listened to Dicky the entire game. He as always painted a nice picture of what was going through the game. He didnt have many positive comments about Ashlands quarter back, I know that much. Dicky's one of the best broadcast men in the state........when ashland is winning. haha.

IMO, he's the best Play-by-Play announcer in the state. The best that I've heard anyway. He always paints a great mental picture of what happening in the game.

............O.K. you guys have fun with this

I'm sure they will. I hope this doesn't get ugly but I'm afraid it might.

He's a great play by play man. I agree with that. As LRCW said he is brutally honest. I dont think it is in any way needed to be brutally honest about anything that goes on during a high school sporting event. Play by play he's great, but when the tomcats arent winning he's often way too critical and negative in my opinion.

We've already talked about Dicky enough in another thread though. Great game by Johnson Central, sounds like the grimms kid is the real deal. Wish I could have been at this one. These two teams will most likely meet again, I personally dont think the score will be near this one sided next time.

A big statement win for Johnson Central ... I think most of us expected the Eagles to prevail, but not necessarily by that margin.

It does further confirm my suspicion that Ashland isn't a top-10 team, but it's still an impressive win.

Nice win, I have a feeling these 2 teams will see eachother again in a few weeks. Mason may be district champs now. I really hope my eagles can carry this into next week. Good Luck Ashland the rest of the way.

The PA was great. You want to talk about class? A quote from Dicky last week over the air waves, "Everyone thinks that Ashland brings their own officals to home games. I guess that will be the excuss next wk. down at JC." That is a word for word quote. You want to talk about class do ya?

 In other words, Johnson Central soundly defeated Ashland, therefore Ashland must be a weak team because Johnson Central had played a weak schedule. You certainly are straining to find a silver lining in the dark cloud hanging over your assessment of the Golden Eagle football program.

Of course, there is another explanation. Ashland, with its wins over Russell and Belfry, may just be the top 10 that many believed them to be. Johnson Central may simply be much better than westsider gave them credit for being. The Golden Eagles may even be playing on a level near that being played by some of those teams that are ranked above them.

Next week, Johnson Central plays a 7-2 Mason County team on the road, which has beaten Frankfort (which dominated highly touted Danville last night) and a respectable 4A Montgomery County team, and which played a respectable game against Lafayette (which defeated a highly touted Henry Clay team last night). By the way, did I mention that one of the Mason County losses was at home to the Ashland team that you believe was proven unworthy of a top 10 ranking because it lost last night to Johnson Central?

Ashland has a solid team, and deserves serious consideration for a top ten ranking, even after losing to Johnson Central. The road game at Mason County next week is a very dangerous one for Johnson Central. The potential for an emotional letdown by this young Golden Eagle team is very real and Mason County has proven that they have the talent to play up to the level of their competition. A Johnson Central loss next week would probably send them on the road to Ashland for the first round playoff game, while Mason County would probably earn the top seed. Coach Buchanan will have his team well prepared next week and I hope that Johnson Central is up to the challenge.

Your reaction to Johnson Central's big win is exactly what I expected and if the Golden Eagles post a convincing win at Mason County, then I expect many of you flatlanders to shift your focus to Johnson Central's past playoff performances, as if it has anything to do with this team's chances. Johnson Central faces an uphill battle to win the 3A championship, and most likely will fall short along with almost every other team in the state. However, nothing is going to extinguish the fire that Jim Matney and his staff has ignited under the Golden Eagles' football program and the future is looking very bright from my vantage point. Maybe it is time for you to take a road trip and see first hand the team whose accomplishments you seem determined to marginalize.

Good morning Vietnam... I have no idea what you're talking about, but your comments are "weird" at best. I was bragging, being sarcastic, being complimentary, being realistic, and breaking it off in the egotistical, holier than thou, cry-babies out there all at the same time. Try to keep up and understand the context of things, Ashland fan..

hmmmmmmm, it didn't appear that way, but, maybe so.

Congratulations to Johnson Central. You have a very good team and it was a convincing win! Shawn Grim is an impressive running back; the Tomcats couldn’t tackle him. He got most of his yardage on 4 long scoring runs blowing off would be tacklers.

Ashland needs to regroup and focus on Boyd Co. and the playoffs now – try to earn our way back to a rematch.

Thanks for the kind words about the team and Shawn Grim, Graybeard. Good luck next week against Boyd County.
I was close to Mr. Martin at times.. but he didnt have much to say.
I only listened to Marting during the second half and he didn't have anything bad to say about the team, but he did complain about the Johnson Central program not having the players' classes listed and he also found time to make fun of Johnson Central's small marching band. The man does do an outstanding job with the play-by-play, which is about all one can hope for at the high school level.
Guess the weak schedule theory can FINALLY be put to rest....JC is for real and IMO, can compete with anyone in 3a...

I would think a little bit of class when talking about the other team and not making comments like you reference would be the minimum you'd expect from somebody doing high school games. Good play by play would be a bonus, IMO.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. If an announcer does a poor job of painting a mental image of the game play and fails to identify who is making plays for both teams, then I feel cheated. I can tolerate a certain lack of class, particularly when "my" team is winning, but there is no point in listenting to a game if the guy in front of the mike cannot make you see the action. It is nice when an announcer can do so with class, but those announcers generally don't announce high school games for very long. (Doug Ormay used to call Johnson Central's game and his predecessor also did a great job with the play by play, IMO. Both moved on after a short while and we were lucky to have them as long as we did.)

I also enjoy listening to Paintsville's games with former coach Walter Brugh providing the color commentary. The game is not called without some "homerism," but Coach Brugh recognizes good plays and good players, regardless of the color of their uniform.

If there is a rematch between Ashland and Johnson Central, I will probably attend the game in person. I would hate to listen to Dicky Martin call the game in the event that Ashland is able to turn the tables on the Golden Eagles in a couple of weeks. However, I will take a radio with me so that I can catch Dicky's comments in the event the Golden Eagles dominate the rematch.:D

I have listened to Coach Leon Hart's post game comments the past two seasons, and I have been equally impressed with him both times. The man is a gracious winner and does not make excuses when he loses. He is a class act and Ashland is lucky to have him on the sidelines.:thumb:

I'll give you a little something that you can put in your all knowing pipe to smoke westsider. I had a Lexington Catholic coach tell me that watched Johnson Central play that Johnson Central would beat his own Knights. Yeah, thats the same Johnson Central team that you have never seen, and probably the same Lex. Catholic team you have not seen either.
