Johnson Central 35 Ashland 7

Featured Replies

He was 3rd in 3A before this game.

Those figures that I gave were for all classes combined.

What is Grimm's height and weight?

 In other words, Johnson Central soundly defeated Ashland, therefore Ashland must be a weak team because Johnson Central had played a weak schedule. You certainly are straining to find a silver lining in the dark cloud hanging over your assessment of the Golden Eagle football program.

Of course, there is another explanation. Ashland, with its wins over Russell and Belfry, may just be the top 10 that many believed them to be. Johnson Central may simply be much better than westsider gave them credit for being. The Golden Eagles may even be playing on a level near that being played by some of those teams that are ranked above them.

Next week, Johnson Central plays a 7-2 Mason County team on the road, which has beaten Frankfort (which dominated highly touted Danville last night) and a respectable 4A Montgomery County team, and which played a respectable game against Lafayette (which defeated a highly touted Henry Clay team last night). By the way, did I mention that one of the Mason County losses was at home to the Ashland team that you believe was proven unworthy of a top 10 ranking because it lost last night to Johnson Central?

Ashland has a solid team, and deserves serious consideration for a top ten ranking, even after losing to Johnson Central. The road game at Mason County next week is a very dangerous one for Johnson Central. The potential for an emotional letdown by this young Golden Eagle team is very real and Mason County has proven that they have the talent to play up to the level of their competition. A Johnson Central loss next week would probably send them on the road to Ashland for the first round playoff game, while Mason County would probably earn the top seed. Coach Buchanan will have his team well prepared next week and I hope that Johnson Central is up to the challenge.

Your reaction to Johnson Central's big win is exactly what I expected and if the Golden Eagles post a convincing win at Mason County, then I expect many of you flatlanders to shift your focus to Johnson Central's past playoff performances, as if it has anything to do with this team's chances. Johnson Central faces an uphill battle to win the 3A championship, and most likely will fall short along with almost every other team in the state. However, nothing is going to extinguish the fire that Jim Matney and his staff has ignited under the Golden Eagles' football program and the future is looking very bright from my vantage point. Maybe it is time for you to take a road trip and see first hand the team whose accomplishments you seem determined to marginalize.

Not "marginalizing" anyone, Dino ... perhaps you should take the chip off of your shoulder.

I stated earlier this week that I didn't feel that Ashland is a top-10 team, and the acccounts of this game give me no reason to change my thinking. Nor does it change my view that this is an impressive win for Johnson Central, which I think is knocking on the door for a top-5 ranking.

Did anybody else see the KCU (Kentucky Christian University) coaches there tonight? I wonder if they were scouting out some prospects?

Yes I spoke to them at halftime. They are looking at a few kids from both teams. They have been going to different games all year. They saw both of these teams play at the start of the season.

I'll give you a little something that you can put in your all knowing pipe to smoke westsider. I had a Lexington Catholic coach tell me that watched Johnson Central play that Johnson Central would beat his own Knights. Yeah, thats the same Johnson Central team that you have never seen, and probably the same Lex. Catholic team you have not seen either.
I don't smoke, firebird, and since I live in western Kentucky (duh ...), it would be pretty unreasonable to assume I've seen either Lexington Catholic or Johnson Central play.

Funny, I haven't criticized Johnson Central one bit this season, other than to comment that their schedule is soft. But to read you and some others, I've done nothing but rip them all season as being no good.

A Lexington Catholic coach said Harrison County was the team to beat in their region last year, and we all know how that turned out.

Ashland couldn't do much tonight.

It was all Shawn Grim with about 283 yards rushing.

JC is 9-0

"The Grim Reaper" Great numbers. Impressive.

That is exactly my point. You need to get out and see a little more than to just sit on the lazy boy before you spout off about how good a team is or is not that is 350 miles from your cozy abode. Again I quoted a comment from a Lex. Cath coach. You saying you know more than one of their coaches?

Westsider, with you its not what you say, its how you say it. By reading your post I know that you are a very educated and clever man, and you know how to use words to have a underlying meaning. You said that Johnson Central had an impressive win but you downgraded that by saying that Ashland is not a top 10 team. Ashland may not be a top 10 team but they are a good team with alot of quality wins. I know that loss to Raceland hurt this teams statewide outlook, but they have beat the last 3 Class 2A state champs in Russell and Belfry and also beat a Mason Co. team that beat Frankfort who whipped Danville and played a Lafayette team close that beat a very good Henry Clay team tonight.

"The Grim Reaper" Great numbers. Impressive.

I like that. We will have to use that.

Guys, I stated my doubts about Ashland earlier this week. It isn't as if I suddenly came up with this to "marginalize" Johnson Central's win.

How many times do I have to state that it was an impressive win? Some of you guys make it really difficult to offer even those congratulations ...

Yeah Lou Holtz publicly used to play the "poor me" card all the time with the news media too. The statement I got from this particular coach was a personal assessment "not made for media" statement.

I haven't stated that I know more than anyone, firebird. My only comments about Johnson Central this year are that they are clearly a good team, one of the top seven in 3A, and that it was hard to tell just how good they are because of the schedule. How that turns into "westsider hates everyone east of I-75" escapes me ...

I think he means "East" of I-75 but with all the spin going on here who knows.;) ;) ;)

The Golden Eagles already have several top 5 rankings. The BGP rankings have been behind the curve all season (and preseason) where this team is concerned. I am sure that your input into those rankings has contributed to BGP's slow recognition that Johnson Central is one of the top 3A teams in the state. If this young Johnson Central team gets upset in the playoffs this season, they may well be a no-show in the preseason rankings again next year. Oh well, c'est la vie!

BTW, if I had a chip on my shoulder, I would criticize ad nauseum the schedule of some randomly chosen western Kentucky team to whom I have no personal affiliation.:fire:

Besides, I enjoy watching eastern Kentucky teams like this year's Johnson Central team and the Chris Jennings vintage Fairview team prove critics like you wrong more than I want to see them ranked where they belong.
