August 1, 20179 yr I've never met a guy good enough to be a "3-7" and didn't carry a GHIN. Who on Earth is giving you strokes based on "about 3-7"? I play with the same guys every time I play. I don't play in tournaments, no need to keep it anymore.
August 8, 20179 yr I have texted this question (using 4 guys between 2 and 7 handicaps) to a guy currently playing in the Canadian Open. I will accept his answer, regardless of which way he goes. Not sure I'll make the grade to get a response during an event, but if he replies, I will post it verbatim.
August 8, 20179 yr I clearly have zero clout. I will try again, as pathetic as that appears, and I'm sure he is simply killing time at Quail Hollow.
August 10, 20179 yr So are you guys and gals watching the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. -3 is leading the thing. Hole #1 is a par 4 527 yard hole. That's just an opener. The threesome of Walker, Mickelson and Dufner all obey. There is no way anyone can put and Amateur scramble team to break 80. It's perfect weather and conditions. No way.

I was thinking about this question during a scramble last weekend, and I don't think it's likely at all. The length would be a killer. Just for comparison, Valhalla from the championship tees is about 20% longer than Lassing Pointe from the black and about 12% longer than the tips. That's a lot!

Anyone that tells me they hit their driver 300 really hits it 260-70. That has been my experience. I am sure there are a few that are acurate but most inflate them greatly.
August 10, 20179 yr I have played in lots of scrambles and there have been some big hitters. None I ever saw consistently put it in the fairway even 280 consistently. They may get 4-5 in. Now that is still woefully short for a pro, outstanding for an amateur. I think what people forget is how consistently these guys put it down the middle.

Okay, now I have to respond, I only hit my driver about 250-265, but I certainly hit well more than 5 fairways that day!!! Come on BM!

I play with tons of guys who hit 280+ consistently and hit a lot of fairways. Not 80% like you said but the pros don't put the ball in the fairway near 80% either.

Now that is still woefully short for a pro, outstanding for an amateur. I think what people forget is how consistently these guys put it down the middle. I have to disagree. 4 or 5 fairways at 280 yards may be outstanding for some amateurs. This wouldn't be very good for a really good amateur player. Especially in a scramble format.
August 11, 20179 yr I'd put Deron Feldhaus driving the ball 300+ consistently and definitely hits more than 4 - 5 fairways. I guarantee that if we took Maysville's top 4 golfers and put them in a scramble format, they would be under par on virtually any course. They just aren't going to have 4 bad shots multiple times. It's not to say they wouldn't make par on some holes, because on the PGA tour that's a good score on some of the holes for anyone.
August 11, 20179 yr I could put 4 guys from my home course of Sag Hollow on the Quail Hollow course that can all hit the ball 300+ and with enough accuracy that at least one or two of them are going to have a very nice playable ball in a scramble format. All four of these guys played college golf. Eric Mason is a two time winner of the Kentucky State Am and an all conference player at WKU. Randy Osborne played at Morehead. Brad Newnam played for Morehead. And Robert Smith played NAIA college golf. They've all played tough, long courses before and putted on fast greens. I think what you are forgetting is you're talking a 4 man scramble team vs an individual pro. Yeah I know those guys are good but a scramble team would rarely be playing from the rough or any Hazard. I don't see a good scramble team bogey more than one hole, if that. And they're going to score at the minimum of -5 at Quail Hollow all 4 days. They'd shoot in the -20's for the tournament. Now, the original question in this thread stated that the BGP member had to pick 3 others to play with them. Well, if I had to play it would definitely weaken the team because I'm a very average golfer, don't hit it long and simply don't have the ability to do the things the other 3 could.
August 11, 20179 yr I think what some are forgetting is an individual golfer has 4 attempts to get par on a par 4 hole but a 4 man scramble team has 16 attempts. That's a huge advantage assuming the scramble team has very good amateur golfers.
August 11, 20179 yr Speed reading through the thread, but I'll give my two cents on what I think is being asked. If I'm allowed to build my own 4 man scramble team (myself included in this), I would wager several dollars that we would win any PGA Tour event, including majors. A couple of keys to this: First, I have to make sure I'm the "D" player. You have to realize these guys on Tour are only getting 1 shot. Where I think that would make a huge difference is on the greens. 4 attempts at any putt improves your odds so much. The proximity to the hole in regulation is another area where I think a great scramble team would be better than a Tour pro. Yeah, those guys hit it close, but not on every hole. They hit the ball to the middle of the green so much more than people realize. You don't have to do that in a scramble. As far as distance, that's a concern of the past.
