Last time we ate at an Olive Garden there was a big hunk of plastic in our salad; I assume from the bag in which it had been originally packed. Haven't been to one since.

Here is our Olive Garden story.

1. Apparently you can go online and make a reservation for a party of 8.

2. Apparently, you can "call ahead" for a reservation for up to 6 people.

3. Apparently, they do not like the number 7!

So--we made a reservation for 8, just because that was the only way, showed up with 7, and they would not honor our reservation. And that was the end of the line for us. Never again! Well--I received a nice gift card to Olive Garden. So I called a couple days ahead, explained that we had 5 kids, plus 2 parents, makes 7--and that we cannot call ahead or reserve. The lady was real nice, saying that was policy, and I pointed out a very flawed corporate policy. The nice lady took care of the lucky 7 of us, gave a us a wonderful, large table, plus a coupon!

I haven't had many gross out moments and I'm typically forgiving of service problems if the food is really good. The one thing that will make me walk out or never visit a place again is cleanliness, especially the bathrooms. A restaurant or any business with a disgusting bathroom will never see me again. It's a clear sign of employees who just don't care.

My son and I ate at Beef O'Brady's every Saturday at 11:30ish from the time he was 3 to about 5 -- kind of our weekly father / son getaway for a couple of hours. One particular Saturday the NFL Draft was on, so I asked the server to turn the TV facing me onto the Draft...which she did. Now, the owner was there 90% of the time on Saturday at this time and would always stop by and chat, often sit with us and eat, and about every 5 or 6 weeks would bring my son free ice cream...a good guy. However, on this particular Saturday he was out of town so the Night Manager (believe me, she told me her title 250x in 3 minutes) was in charge, and about 10 minutes after my server turned on the Draft for me, this manager came over and turned that TV back to whatever channel it was on prior. I said, "Ma'am, I was watching that, in fact I asked the server to turn it on to that station for me, and since we are the only ones here, do you mind putting it back?" She said, "nope, the TV schedule that was left for me said that TV is supposed to be on XYZ channel (forget the channel, doesn't matter, wasn't the Draft), so I'm turning that back on." I was polite back, although in complete shock, and asked her to reconsider and that I'm sure the owner would be fine with you doing that for me, we are here every Saturday. She said, and I'm quoting, "well, since he isn't here, I guess we'll never know." I ate, paid my bill, left my server a 100% tip, and have never been back.

Exactly my thought. She could have run off 20% of his customer base, and the owner not even know why.

I had a dog walk in and lay down under my table once at Ma Kelly's in Richmond. A guy across the room said "he won't bother you".

 

That was good enough for me. Didnt hinder me one bit.

 

Of course Ma Kelly's was a different kind of joint and should be exempt from these type of discussions. Definitely deserves a thread of its own and anyone who went to EKU prior to the 1990's probably has a Ma Kelly's story.

When I get THAT type of response/service I always , like you, respond politely yet directly that they need to reconsider their stance. When they do not I let someone know, again without losing my temper, and give them a chance to respond appropriately. If they do we're good. I'll be back. If they do not, like Applebees in Crestview Hills, I never return.

In 2007 they agreed to one of those "bring in a ticket and 10% of the bill goes to your organization" for a full day. We exploded the thing, turned it into a massive dinner with all our families and a party at night. Was expecting a huge payout. They pull some crap and said they only agreed from 4-6pm. We learned the hard way that we didnt have it in writing.

You definitely owed the manager, who took care of you so often, an explanation. The man deserved the vacation. Plus, you missed a great chance to get back at the obnoxious self absorbed substitute manager. I would have made it my mission to put her in her place.

I knew Ma Kelly. Wonderful lady. Used to go to church with her and some of her family. The college kids LOVED Ma Kelly's.
