Julian Tackett discusses future of Sweet 16s

Featured Replies

When the wifi worked I was able to watch any game I wanted to on my phone/iPad and @TheDeuce was watching games on his laptop. This issue doesn't affect folks like us though who will be at the Sweet 16 regardless so I get it.

When, that is correct on the wifi

I am going regardless as well.

Thanks for the explanation

Completely off topic but why is football which play 9-10 games get 2 scrimmages the same as basketball/baseball/softball/ that play up to and over 30 games?

You would have to ask the KHSAA that question. My assumption is the KHSAA believes it takes 2 scrimmage opportunities to prepare for an athletic season.

Either:

1. Take out the first round of playoffs, 1 seed gets a bye and 2-3 seeds play, move basketball season up a week or

2. Play girls/boys state tournament both in Rupp Arena the first week after regionals, Monday through Saturday, (just 1 day longer than it is now)

Monday - 8 girls games starting @ 8:30/10:00/11:30/1:00, empty the gym, start back @ 5:00, 6:30, 8:00, 9:30

Tuesday - 8 boys games with the same format as above in the girls

Wednesday - 4 girls games just like it is now, 12:00 & 1:30 then 6:30 & 8:00

Thursday - 4 boys games just like the girls above

Friday - Girls semifinal games @ 12:00 & 1:30, Boys semifinal games @ 6:30 &

8:00

Saturday - Girls Championship @ 2:00, clear the gym, boys championship @ 7:00

What's everyone think??

Tell the NCAA to move the tournament back a week, duh.

Football does not have a bye week built into the schedule. Teams with bye weeks play during what is called week 0. In order to play week 0, teams must give up a pre-season scrimmage. Teams that play week 0 get 1 scrimmage, but get a bye week. Teams that play week 1 get 2 scrimmages and do not get a bye week.

The football season in Ohio begins and ends the same week as Kentucky. Ohio does not have an option to play week 0. In Ohio, basketball practice does not begin until November 4. Kentucky schools start basketball practice 3 weeks earlier than Ohio on October 15. The state Tournament in Ohio is not until March 23-March 25.

Ohio to the best of my Knowledge only plays 22 regular season Basketball games and BTW their State Tourney is still going on, since they play at numerous HS gyms throughout the State as it isn't done the same whey KHSAA does Ky..

Why move the girls to Rupp. In the Ninth Region the girls play at the BB&T the same as the boys and few fans attend the games that would't fill up Holmes, Ryle, Conner or Cooper HS gyms and the BB&T looks empty for their games, while even on the worst days the boys have, decent crowds watch and most couldn't be played at a local HS gym, unless you emptied the gym after each game.

Tough enough for schools that make runs in football...

Starting earlier makes that even worse.

I haven't taken the time to read all of the thread so my apologies if this is already mentioned....

Eliminate the first round of the football playoffs. End the season with the Finals on Thanksgiving weekend. Start the basketball season a week earlier.

Other than folks complaining about a 3 seed from a football district not making the playoffs, it's a win-win in my book.

I think you are drastically underestimating how much time is necessary for a game, and when the next game could start. No way is 90 minutes enough for a game and the warmups for the next game.

Just looking back at the update threads for this year's games and where the game actually started versus when it was scheduled...

Perry Central & Scott (supposed to tip at 1:30) started at 2:08

Ballard & Fern Creek (slated for 8:00 start) got underway at 8:24

Cooper & Fern Creek (scheduled for 8:00) didn't begin until 8:45

All of those were with just ONE game played prior to them. It averages out to just over 35 minutes. With the current set up, only 1 game is affected. With your's, it would have a chain reaction all the way down the line.

Game for 5:00 - starts on time

Game for 6:30 - doesn't start until 7:05

Game for 8:00 - won't begin until 9:10

Game for 9:30 - probably wouldn't begin until around 11:15

It's a nice theory that you've got, but I just don't see reality coming anywhere near that (at least for your first 2 days).

First 2 days are just a takeoff on the way the All A is set up.

Or simply learn how to work a DVR. The UK fans I know are so superstitious they DVR UK games anyway because they think they'll jinx them and only watch later if they find out they won. Lots and lots of those kind of people, probably a good percentage on this site.

Hmmmm...did not know that. Of the few All A games I've been to, it's either been the semi-finals or finals, so not a lot of games scheduled beforehand. I'm curious how their timetable often turns out, because it seems more often than not most of the regular season games (that are scheduled to start 7:30) don't always start on time...and that's with just a shortened JV game leading into them. Do they shorten the warm up period or something else?

Not sure about shortening the warmups, never been to it, but I know from people that have that the games do run over, that's why both the girls and the boys will get a day off after the first round games. Changes 10 days of renting an arena for both to 6 days instead, any other thoughts on it??

Shortening the season or changing the dates is not going to help attendance of the sweet 16. It's a little deeper than that.

Get rid of the basketball district tournament. Easy peezy fixed. Shaves the week off so basketball can eat its own problem and leave football alone.

:taz: don't understand why football is even brought into the conversation.

I think you are right, there are deeper issues. It is reasonable to think, however, that competing against the SEC and NCAA Tournaments when you don't have to isn't a great plan. I'm anxious to see how a different date works - it can't hurt.

I don't think it would hurt it anymore.
