February 7, 20179 yr I dont know enough to comment. She made some really dumb remarks but I seriously have not followed this one enough to know. She also has stepped on some toes along the way which has not helped her. My work has kept me to busy the past week or so to even try to figure it out. But there is a large chance she gets confirmed whether she is qualified or not. Wont be the first time someone not qualified got one of the appointed jobs. But to my point do you think the events of the past three weeks have helped the Democrats gain any voter by the way they are acting? Like you, I haven't kept up with how the Democrats are acting on this issue, so anything I said would be pure speculation. I can say, however, that anyone that votes to confirm her is not doing so with the best interest of the country in mind.
February 7, 20179 yr You mean the "debate" is taking place. There is no real argument for DeVos. I'm glad there are some republican senators who see that. Agree. This gives me hope.

February 7, 20179 yr Supporting charter schools is a decent cause. But throwing lots of money at it is not a qualifier for this position. She would do good to step down voluntarily. Its a low level position (can anyone name the current Sec of Education?) - but still needs someone that has better background.

You bring up a good point, and the cynical side of me is forced to ask what's in this for her? Why does a billionaire, with seemingly no interest in public education and plenty of companies and foundations to fill her time and money with, want to become Secretary of Education in the first place?

Fair question, IMO.

Why does a billionaire, with seemingly no interest in public education and plenty of companies and foundations to fill her time and money with, want to become Secretary of Education in the first place? Sometimes with people of means its simply the prestige, honor or title. That is not call in doubt that she probably has well-meaning at heart. But she has been mostly a one-trick-pony. And the one trick, as many have correctly pointed out, works only in urban and semi-urban areas.

She also has stepped on some toes along the way which has not helped her. I feel you JJ. It's easier for me to say I don't know enough to comment on this one, than to try and defend this decision. I stay away from this topic with my liberal friends because in my head I say, "I don't know enough about it". But in reality, it's because I choose to not look into it because its just a bad decision.

Welcome to BGP. Agree with @TheDeuce, definitely a good question.
February 7, 20179 yr 9 Damning Betsy DeVos Quotes on Education - Important Moments From Betsy DeVos's Confirmation Hearing DeVos responded that states should decide school gun policies. Citing Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming, DeVos said, "I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the schools to protect from potential grizzlies."

February 7, 20179 yr While the debate rages on all night, and whether or not Devos is good or bad, the Democrats are killing themselves with the way they are conducting business. Its hurting the nation. Agree or not, its facts, and its facts that will show where it hurts the most. At the ballot boxes. How is it bad to stand up against a bad nominee? So the Senate should just rubber stamp every nominee made by an incoming President? If so, then why is there even a vote? Not on this one Jesse. To obstruct just to obstruct is wrong and I see the Dems doing that with the SC Nominee and others but this vote is different and many Americans see it that way.
February 7, 20179 yr Who would be your pick for this position? I think you said somewhere you were a teacher so you should have a name? Why should he have a name? His job is not to nominate a DEA Director. It's to teach. Trump's job was to nominate one. And I think this one is a poor selection
