February 8, 20179 yr Maybe the abandoned school buildings can become the internment camps that are bound to soon open? Or used for the kids who try to come to school and just cause problems and deter others from learning.
February 8, 20179 yr Every kid cant learn at a high level just like every kid cant run a 4.4 forty. Not every kid is smart just like every kid isnt 6'0 tall. Some kids are better at vocational jobs just like some arent. We put way to much emphasis on some kids who are not smart and try to make them learn advanced algebra. Some of these kids can barely read and will never get the practice at home because the parents cant do it either or dont care. Put these kids in a class where they learn basic skills and help them get jobs they are suited for. They are not going to a 4 year college. A vocational college.
February 8, 20179 yr One thing that needs to be noted is fixing bad schools has very little to do with changing teachers and administration. It has everything to do with changing communities and changing parents. I am not saying bad teachers do not exist because they do. I am saying that if you took the teachers from the best school in the state and swapped them with the teachers from the worst school in the state, you would see no change in achievements at either school.

I don't agree at all. You are implying that teachers have little to no effect on how well students do. That simply isn't true, IMO.

Also the ability to teach matters. I am saying that community and parenting matter more, IMO. Their are many students from "failing schools" that are successful with the same teachers as the failing kids. It is about the population as a whole. Most "failing school" teachers have to deal with issues that are out of their control.

I think it takes a village and all parties are equally responsible. But I definitely agree with your point about teachers having to deal with issues out of their control.
February 9, 20179 yr No. Most are wealth re-distribution centers that provide employment and political platforms for those unwilling or unable to support themselves in a free market economy. What is the difference between colleges and high schools and the people that work in them?

But I definitely agree with your point about teachers having to deal with issues out of their control. I posted this to some degree in another thread, but there is an achievement gap among the "under-privileged" that is most pronounced at the beginning of each school year. During the course of the year, the gap narrows due to the positive impact the teacher has on the student. Then the year is over, the gap widens again...this is on the home environment! Unless we deal with those factors that sustain these situations, or work around it with more investment in mandatory (of some nature) Pre-K classes and transportation, OUR system will continue to fail these children.
