Me to Mcpapa. I have two that are college grads with jobs, one thats a sophomore in college. Oldest getting married in May. Thats gonna mean grandchildren. I need to pay more attention I guess.

I have seen over the course of many decades on this planet a "me first, money first" develop to the point that everything seems to be about fattening the portfolio and nothing seems to be about what's in store for the next generation and beyond. "Me, now" is the mantra.

Care to elaborate? I know a little background on her...no experience in the education field, supporter of voucher system and charter schools, heads some sort of organization on education policy...family is loaded and donated millions to Rep party and candidates.

 

I don't know if she would be good for the job or not. Seems to be she might be getting rewarded for her donations and not necessarily what she might actually bring to the table, but I just don't know enough about her. So give me some insight on the literal "hate" for her by many as Ed Sec pick. And being a teacher I'm sure you have probably researched this more than the average person.

 

I'm in the same boat as you.

One response that stuck with me was her unwillingness to say she would hold for profit colleges accountable in their attempts of fleecing college students. It's sad and I hope it has nothing to do with the president's ventures in for profit colleges.

In some ways I believe it's because the discipline of critical thinking is being lost in the education system as we teach to a test score that is mandated.

 

When they get to some very good colleges the students are asked to critically analyze and think for the first time and defend their conclusions.

I think you're right on the money. There's a related problem of students not being able to handle the freedom of college too.

At the end of the day they aren't supposed to be; however, with major tv deals and donations their revenue does turn into profit.

I'm going to equate this with Obamacare. For years both sides had opportunities to take meaningful steps to help this situation, just like health care. But in both examples powerful lobbys (insurance companies and teachers unions) fought any change in the status quo. Just like with Obamacare it now looks like there will be major changes in the education system and just like Obamacare it really doesn't seem to matter that there are many people opposed to it.
