I don't really understand the CC hate. It's just standards. Fewer than NCLB and less emphasis on testing than NCLB.

 

It seems many have a problem with school curriculum and mistaking that with the Cc standards.

I'm sorry but IMO you're wrong. It's not just the standards. It's the accountability that makes you teach toward the test.

It's the only thing they should be doing, giving our money back. If not for the loans then we should get to keep more of our money. You may like big brothers hand in your pocket. I don't. I think I can make better decisions for me and mine than they can.

I'm not a Democrat. And I think the Feds should get out of the education loan business. I don't mind grants.

Appointing somebody with no relationship to the NEA is a step in the right direction. In an ideal world, the Dept. of Education would be eliminated entirely. For now, I will settle for a Sec. of Education who supports school choice, vouchers, and charter schools.

Agreed.. The Dept of Education is one of the most unconstitutional departments in D.C.

If the new administration had come out with a plan for rural schools, many would be screaming that Trump doesn't care about inner city kids. I would think liberals would be happy that the administration is trying to reach out to inner city needs, unless they are afraid it will cost them votes in the future.

Its the common core standards that form the curriculum from my understanding. Basically everything is laid out for you in advance and teachers feel they don't get to "teach" anymore. This is just from my experience in speaking with teachers. This is more of the feeling from elementary school teachers in my experience.

Common Core is just standards. What states and schools attach to it is a completely different issue.

 

NCLB directly attached funding to test scores. We have been in a period where the federal govt was much more invasive.

The platform has been out there for months/years. Gov. Bevin and the state legislature is pushing the same ideas. Of All of the KY counties I would wager all but ten find these ideas useless.

Common Core sponsors ACT End of a Course testing. Now we have accountability that is based on not just EOC testing but other factors. But the tests are the biggest part of it.

 

While funding isn't an issue, schools can now be taken over by the state department which results in a loss of job, use of millions in tax payer money, etc. What does the state focus on when they're there? Test scores.

To me teachers should be able to outline their own curriculum and get their own curriculum approved instead of getting a curriculum handed to them. Schools develop their curriculum. Teachers may need to fuss at their superiors if they don't like it.

 

My wife teaches math. It's been a shift to keep up. A way to teach kids the processes rather than rote memorization. Still a curriculum issue decided by the school not common core.

It's all one in the same. KY opted in as one of the first states to adopt EOC. Norm referenced testing, aligned with Common Core. It's all related.

 

As for schools I'm SEKY, of course they struggle nationally or even statewide. Lower tax base, lower teacher pay, fewer resources than most places nationally. I doubt the teachers in those schools want their kids to fail. As a matter of fact, I'd guarantee they want them to succeed.

 

Equality is not possible. Holding a small rural school to the same accountability as a suburban school is pointless and unfair. State departments come in and flush Millions of dollars into the district and suddenly test scores go up. It's not the teaching, it's the resources. An extremely motivated district can overcome some of these disadvantages, but long term, you're going to get a better education in an area with more money. More access and you're going to attract the best teachers because of the pay.

 

That's what kills me about nationalized and even statewide education. It doesnt promote equality, it highlights the inequality of America or our state. Maybe that is the true goal of state and nationalized education?

 

There's no real solution. Sure you could take money from the richer districts, but how fair is that? Shouldn't the kids of successful parents benefit?
