Lafayette Football Player Swung At Official After State Game

Featured Replies

If he punched the ref press charges. If he simply knocked the refs hat off what charges does everyone expect to be filed?

If he only knocked off the refs hat, let the school handle it. Suspend the kid for a week or something like that.

Class D Felony in KY. Kid hit the ref in the forehead and as I understand it, charges have been filed by both the KHSAA and the official. Don't mess with officials.

What charge?

That kid just embarrassed the whole coaching staff.

That team will now be thought of that way.

What charge?

If it's Class D, then he's talking Assault 3. That would mean the ref classifies as a school or school district employee or volunteer under 508.025(1)(a)(9-10) unless I'm missing another section.

If not, then it's possible to charge under Assault 4, which is a class A misdemeanor.

Lafayette was already an embarrassment before this incident for how their coaches allow their kids to act.

Like what did they act like or do?

If he's not a senior, he should never play a KHSAA sport again.

Agreed but since he is a senior, he should not be able to play a winter or spring sport (if he is a multi-sport kid)...ridiculous.

It's a felony to contact an official. Needs to be have charges against him. If not then it just sets a precedent that this behavior is acceptable. Most life lessons are learned hard.

Here is the tread from the Lafayette/Dunbar game on August 19

It seems there was a bench clearing brawl near the end of the game. Boyle County hosted Lafayette the next week and Coach Eric Shaw was serving game 1 of a 2 game suspension as the result of his/team actions vs Dunbar.

Someone closer to the programs may have more detailed information.

I think there was also an issue in the playoff game with Butler.

Clearly a documented pattern of unsportsmanlike conduct is associated with this Lafayette football team.

I'm ride or die with Jackie on this one.

Ditto!

Section 2. Note: Enactment of this bill provides and makes the assault of a sports official an offense in the third degree which is a Class D felony.

Only problem with that is proving that he intended to cause physical injury. I've seen guys knock a hat off of someones head as a sign of disrespect, not because they were trying to cause injury. In the video all you see is the young man knocking the officials hat off. Was the official treated for an injury?

With that said, a menacing charge may fly.

Attempting still covers it. The motion of his arm looks like there was more malicious intent than knocking his hat off. Charge him and the let the Commonwealth and Grand Jury hear the case.

Why is BGP always so quick to call for the harshest punishment? I do not approve of what this student did, but no real harm was done. I think allowing the school to suspend and give detention , plus his athletic career being over is severe enough. I don't like the idea of possibly ruining a kids life for an emotional reaction on the field where no one was really hurt.

I know I'm going to be killed. But I like to have teaching moments and if possible keep it out of the court system.
