I'd be curious to hear from witnesses whether he swung with an open or closed fist. If it was open handed, there is no doubt in my mind that he was going for the officials hat. Closed fist, would typically mean he had far worse intentions. It's hard to tell from the video posted though, so I'll leave it at this; if the kid's intention was to hit the ref with a closed fist at that distance, he needs to not be fighting.

Sorry for the digression....but I read an article somewhere about evolution and violence that human beings are the only mammals who can make a closed fist and thus use it as a weapon.

I have watched the attached video clip over and over.

 

It is malicious and with intent. The guy seeks out the official and "knocks his hat off".

 

I would be willing to let it go at that, but it appears the player has decided to confront the official again, but players and another official get in the way to prevent any further altercation.

 

I would love to see more video before and after.

 

Based on what I see, laws have been broken. An official was physically assaulted, followed by verbal assault that may have escalated if not intervened by players and another official.

You don't have to agree with it. It's a state law though. And the video is very clear that his intent was not to just knock his hat off.

It's state law that knocking someones hat off is assault ? I would argue from that close of range if he was able to knock that hat off , then if he wanted to punch him he would have.
