Lafayette Football Player Swung At Official After State Game

Why is BGP always so quick to call for the harshest punishment? I do not approve of what this student did, but no real harm was done. I think allowing the school to suspend and give detention , plus his athletic career being over is severe enough. I don't like the idea of possibly ruining a kids life for an emotional reaction on the field where no one was really hurt.

I know I'm going to be killed. But I like to have teaching moments and if possible keep it out of the court system.

Who cares if there was no real harm done? The intent was there period. The kid is a punk and this isn't the first time that program has embarrassed

themselves. I say prosecute the punk to the fullest.

You don't know this kid. You're basing your entire opinion on him with this one action. I know if people did that with me I wouldn't like the results.

When kids do dumb things I like to remind myself of the dumb things I did as a kid and not overreact. I'm not saying don't punish the kid clearly he deserves to be punished. I just don't see a need to get the court system involved.

Attempting still covers it. The motion of his arm looks like there was more malicious intent than knocking his hat off. Charge him and the let the Commonwealth and Grand Jury hear the case.

Agree.

The problem with this philosophy and I've seen it more times than I can count, is when you say "oh he's a kid and was just emotional", you're confirming to him that he gets a pass cause he's good at something. Then in 6 months, he's society's problem for the police to deal with.

I'm not giving him a pass. Put him in dentention everyday for the rest of the year , suspend him. I just don't think in the particular case LE needs to be involved.

You're suggesting punishment for a felony is detention. That's the very definition of a pass.

Charging someone with a felony on what I saw in that video is over punishment in my mind.

Well state law makers disagree. It's about intent. His intent was clearly more malicious than knocking his hat off. He deserves to be charged.

The more I watch that video and see the lack of action by the coaching staff, and apparently this punk behavior seems to be par for the course with this school and staff, the more I think they deserve a ban from postseason play next year.

If this kid isn't punished severely and a message isn't sent for contacting an official in this manner then it will be open season on officials. Officials have to put up with enough. They should have to worry about Johnny decked out in football pads taking a swing at them and only getting suspended for 3 days.

I always hate to get the law involved and would only use that as a last resort. I don't know enough about this kid to determine if this is his time.

This is where I am at on this. He should be suspended for the rest of the year from playing any sports. I just don't think what I saw on that video is a felony. Maybe the law says so but I don't think the kid should go to jail for that.

I know we will be in the minority . I also don't know enough about this kid. Is he repeat offender or was this his first time in trouble. All that factors into what I think should happen.

I've just grown use to on this board everytime a kid or a group of kids do something stupid we want to throw the book at them. I'm just not a fan of that with kids.

Basically where I'm at.

Bleeding heart liberal says charge him with the KY statute. It will be pleaded down, but players ( especially seniors) have to know putting your hands on an official is not accepted.
