Hypothetically speaking everyone wants to see more competitive games. So eliminate the first round of the playoffs and have a selection committee determine a final four to be played at WKU/UK/UofL. Still have class champions and then have the Statewide Champ. KY could be at the forefront of HS Football. #1 Trinity vs. #4 Belfry, #2 Bowling Green vs #3 Johnson Central

Who gets the concession money. Is it split with the teams?

 

Schools get nothing from the state championship games. KHSAA gets the gate, the host school get's whatever it's cut of concessions is based on their contract with their vendor.

When tiny Covington Holy Cross played in (and won the state championship) at E.A. Diddle two years ago in women's basketball, attendance for its four sessions was listed at:

 

4,461 (opening game against Bell County, with E-town v. Mercer County right after).

5,521 (quarter-final against E-town, with Male v. Henderson County before).

4,604 (semis vs. Male, with Mason Co. v. Allen County afterward)

5,335 (championship vs. Allen County).

 

My understanding at the time was that these were fairly high attendance figures historically but by no means a record.

 

So Bellarmine would seem a bit small.

The state championship games will be played at WKU through 2018 unless the KHSAA can find a loophole to get out of the contract. Once the contract is over the games WILL move to UK. We'll play the games in front of 60,000 empty seats and most "fans" will be OK with that because the games will be played at UK and they'll be all "tingly" about playing there. I have no issue with playing at UK but I do have an issue that only 4 championships would be contested outside of the Lexington area. The athletes from Lexington shouldn't be the only ones that get to compete for championships in their home area.

I'm fine with rotating the state games at different venues.. I'm okay with EKU or Murray St getting the championship games every 5 years or so. I'm okay with Lindsey Wilson getting them. Georgetown, NKU.. Any venue that can seat at least 8-10k would suffice.. But, anyone thinking simply moving it from B.Green is going to automatically make the ticket prices, parking, food, etc, go down, is simply fooling themselves. Going to be the same or very similar everywhere.

Colorado does this. Two largest classifications that can generate the most fans and revenue, play at a college or pro stadium, the rest are played at the highest remaining seeds home field, creates great excitement and atmosphere for the hosting team. Teams are also seeded by an RPI system at the beginning of the playoffs.

CHSAA first became interested in using an RPI system when searching for a way to standardize all postseason qualification processes. It was also used by the football committee in 2015 as a component to the seeding criteria, following a presentation and suggestion from community members. The RPI formula is used by both the NCAA and NAIA, among other organizations, as part of their postseason system. In August, CHSAA's board of directors mandated that all committees use RPI for postseason qualification. Committees have been implementing the system ever since, with some using it as a seeding criteria, as well.

 

How are the components of the formula specifically calculated?

◦Winning percentage (WP): Divide the number of wins by the number of total games played. A tie is worth half a win. If a win in an individual contest gives that contest a winning percentage of 1.00, a tie would give that individual contest a winning percentage of .500 for both teams.

◦Opponents' winning percentage (OWP): Average the winning percentages of a team's opponents. (Note: This is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, instead by averaging each winning percentage of the opponents.) All games involving the team whose RPI is being calculated are ignored in this process.

◦Opponents' opponents winning percentage (OOWP): The same process as described above, except calculated for the opponents of a team's opponents. Note that there is an exception for out-of-state teams, which is addressed below.

 

When calculating out-of-state opponents, their direct winning percentage (for example, .750) will count toward the formula, but each of their opponents will have a .500 winning percentage assigned. Were this not the case, schools would be chasing tens of thousands of opponents of out-of-state opponents over the course of a season, and there is no way to ensure the accuracy of that data. The .500 figure was selected because it is the average value of opponents' opponents winning percentages across all sports in the data we've run.

 

Except for the home field advantages, I like this one. Would not be hard to implement at say the final eight. This would reinvigorate the fans too.

Give it a rest with the "UK fans are tingly" stuff. It is a fun narrative I guess but I don't think you have a clue what most high school football fans think.

I'd prefer for the games to move to UK for the simple facts that I've been to enough of the bars and restaurants in Bowling Green over the last 2 or 3 finals. New places to eat and have fun are enough for me. Heck, I'd love a 2 year rotation between UK, UofL and WKU. Give me plenty of time to forget about anywhere I had been to since the last time.

I think it is too hard. These teams are dominant this year but how long can they sustain that dominance?

 

Johnson Central won their first title this year. 4A loses South Warren but John Hardin should be good again. Johnson Central is loaded and I could see them dominating 4A for the next couple of years.

 

Belfry and Central are both at the height of their programs right now. 3A is loaded but downswing in talent makes it look less loaded than what it really is. You still have Boyle County, LexCath, Bardstown, Caldwell County, Corbin....3A ain't no joke. Belfry was just that good this year and Central is Central. Ty Scroggins is that man.

 

1A is competitive but Beechwood appears set to make a run now that Mayfield isn't there waiting on them. 1A will still be competitive though IMO.

 

2A will continue to be competitive as Mayfield, CAL, DeSales, Danville and Lexington Christian will all field strong teams next season and Mayfield may actually be #5 in the 2A preseason rankings.

 

5A....well....BG is in a really good spot right now. Well timed cycles of talent mixed in with a superior coaching staff and the fun will be in watching if anyone can defeat the Purples.

 

6A...Trinity is Trinity but Male won it all in 2015 and Scott County won it all in 2013.

As long as they can claim state titles in such a class all is well. Let's not worry about the teams that get dominated year in and year out in these classes while others continue their domination and build bigger trophy cases. Not saying all of the state title winners fit this category, but some most definitely do. These are the teams that should play up a class, and allow teams that are constantly dominated see if they can compete in a lower class.

I'm glad that people are getting a "kick" out of the work harder thing. Kind of made me laugh too. All of a sudden people are experts on Highlands football, you know, the people that have not attended a game, or even been to a Highlands practice.

 

I'm not sure about this, but I would say Highlands has more state titles playing up a class than most 4A or 5A teams have state titles appearances, period.

 

How many times has your team won a state title while playing up a class, or even played up a class at all? I'm not talking about the one or two out of state games that some programs play. Obviously, I'm not talking about KY 6A.
