What happens when that schools enrollment drops and they technically should drop in class?

Belfry has a current enrollment in the 600's and is looking more and more like they will drop to 2A enrollment in the next realignment (By example CAL had a significantly higher enrollment than Belfry). If Belfry was moved to 4A should they move back to 3A when their enrollment drops or should they be asked to play two classes up?

 

Why would Johnson Central move up to 5A after winning their first State Title? Wouldn't this mean all 4A teams with a State Title in that current classification would move up such as South Warren?

 

How about Highlands who had previously dominated 4A while playing up and are now 5A... should they be asked to move to 6A based off their past success? Once Bowling Green move sup if Highlands wins the title do they go to 6A and effectively play nearly 3 classes above their enrollment?

 

You have Hazard moving up when they were a State Runner-Up? Do we have to move all Runner-Ups then? Why did CAL not move up but DeSales did? Why didn't NewCath when they have lived in the State Finals for a decade?

You cant just classify schools based on the size of each. That is asinine, and exactly why you have the mismatches you have now.

If you expect this to be something that is actually worth considering though the criteria has to be set.

 

Overall record could be very deceiving. If you are in a crap District and play crap competition but you can't get past the 2nd Round, you shouldn't be moved up. If you are in a powerhouse district and lay all 6A schools and lose 5 games but reach the State Semi's everywhere you shouldn't be staying down instead of the team feasting on a weak schedule.

 

You have mis-matches now because you have six classes and 4 teams getting in from every district, and some Districts that are a lot weaker than others. Ultimately we agree on the easiest way to make the playoffs more competitive, seeding... but the Geography of the State makes that difficult.

 

I still think that if you went to only allowing 3 teams in per District and seeding the Semi-States it would make a massive positive change in competition.

 

If it was up to me:

- Kentucky would have five classes, not six

- Three teams per District would make the playoffs not 4 (this preserves the significance of the regular season and winning your district)

- The Semi State's would be seeded and the Regional Finals and Semi-Finals would be on neutral fields.

- Much like Georgia, if a certain percentage of your school enrollment lives out of District or your School's Geographic footprint, you are required to play up a class.

 

Making these changes alone would solve most of the critiques with the current set-up. First and 2nd Round games would become more competitive, the depth and balance of classes increase, teams who may be the second best team in the State but stuck behind #1 in their District get a fair shot at revenge on a neutral field.

But to answer your Christian County question, no they are saddled where they are because they are in District 1 that is married to District 2 (BG district).

It's all about the districts and how the cross-bracketing aligns them, which was expressly set up by the KHSAA.

 

The reason X & T meet before the State Championship game is as simple as St X (Male/Manual) is in 6A District 3 while Trinity is in 6A District 4. Those districts are not always aligned to play each other Rounds 1 and 2 of the playoffs (where you play teams from your paired district), but predominantly have been by week 3 or the Regional Final Round.

 

It is interesting to note that next season in 2017 by the way I read the cross-bracketing chart, that St X and Trinity could again meet at the state championship round as St X District 3 will be on the east side of the bracket. This will flip back in 2018. The current cross-bracketing chart only goes through the 2018 football season.

 

Concerning 5A cross-bracketing and not switching districts 1 and 2 and 7 and 8, you'd have to take that up with the KHSAA. However, I can't see it feasible for first and second round games to make teams travel from Letcher County Central to Christian County just to get a running clock game. That doesn't make sense and I would suppose that is why. When you talk about traveling Week 4 in the playoffs teams typically don't care where they have to go. Not the case in Week 1 if they are just trying to get the season over with. Just my 2 cents.

 

I understand Christian County's disdain with this setup. I think it is good the Colonels don't play BG in the regular season next year and potentially only in the playoffs as they will have a very solid veteran team. I don't like it as much in 2018 where County has typically taken it on the chin in the regular season and stormed back to fight hard in the playoff matchup. But still lot to like about football in Christian County right now!
