I have always personally hated that last line. Highlands fans use to say that all the time. Like working harder was the only difference between being a state champ or not. Just like with Highlands currently, I doubt they aren't working as hard as they use to. They just don't have the same type of players currently as they use to. They even see now it's not all just about working hard. I guarantee there are some teams who probably didn't even make the title game, who have worked as hard if not harder than some teams who win titles, but didn't mean they were going to win a title.

 

To win a title and to be a consistent title contender you have to have a mixture of things. You do have to work hard, you also have to have good coaching, good team chemistry, and you also have to have the talent too. Just like 2 years ago when Bowling Green lost in the third round. It wasn't like they didn't work as hard, or didn't have as good of coaching. They just weren't as talented that year as other years. However the majority of time now Bowling Green as a progam has all the things I mentioned, work ethic, great talent, and great coaching. Just look at Pulaski County. I would say the overall work they put in was great, their coaching seems very good, however overall talent across the board didn't match BG.

 

Sorry for my little rant, but that has always been a pet peeve of mine, when a top team acts like just working harder is the difference. Many teams may work just as hard but may not have all the other variables I mentioned.

Ha ok. I wish I would have waited 20 more minutes before seeing this thread and it would have saved me typing time. I would have understood what you were getting at lol.

First of all having the games at WKU is just about perfect as far as view and stadium size. The stadium is perfect. Putting the title games in 50,000 seat stadium like Louisville or Lexington would be a joke.

 

Second, WKU is an absolute joke when it comes to pricing and fan friendlyness. That's why they have attendance issues at their home games. Concessions is highway robbery. I never buy anything just out of principal, I don't care how thirsty I am. Then their ushers which are third party people brought up from Nashville were harassing people about their seats. Cops even had to be called. They tried to tell just a few people the red chair backs were reserved for VIP and you had to have a specific ticket for them. That's never been the case that I know of, everyone just sits first come first serve. I don't even know where you can buy VIP tickets, but even if they do exist it was never enforced.

 

Blowouts happen, there blowouts when there was 4 classes too. I don't know what can be done about it if anything. I would be more happy if they would fix the first round of the playoffs.

 

I have been disappointed in the crowds myself not just this year. But attendance seems to be down at games during the rest of the season too. Wish more people would come out like they used too.

CAL won the 2A title 24-6. They won their state semifinal game 48-24.

 

Belfry won the 3A title 52-31. They won their state semifinal game 42-17.

 

Johnson Central won the 4A title 48-0. They won their state semifinal game 51-0 and that game was a running clock with 8 minutes left in the second quarter.

 

Bowling Green won the 5A title 70-22. They won their state semifinal game 34-7.

 

Trinity won the 6A title 56-21. They won their state semifinal game 24-14.

 

 

Looking at these scores the only thing that I see that needs to happen is that teams need to work harder.

 

Franklin-Simpson won playoff games:

 

61-6 over Hopkins Central

40-0 over Allen County

33-16 over South Warren

27-7 over John Hardin.

 

Bowling Green, Johnson Central, and Belfry are the three best teams in the state.

 

Franklin, Pulaski and Central just had the unfortunate task of facing three powerhouses.

Then it also seems like some of the teams that didn't win need to move down classes. For example. 6A and 5A teams getting blown out need to move down. I don't know, may sound stupid, but create parity by shuffling classes. Would make scheduling difficult.

I think it is too hard. These teams are dominant this year but how long can they sustain that dominance?

 

Johnson Central won their first title this year. 4A loses South Warren but John Hardin should be good again. Johnson Central is loaded and I could see them dominating 4A for the next couple of years.

 

Belfry and Central are both at the height of their programs right now. 3A is loaded but downswing in talent makes it look less loaded than what it really is. You still have Boyle County, LexCath, Bardstown, Caldwell County, Corbin....3A ain't no joke. Belfry was just that good this year and Central is Central. Ty Scroggins is that man.

 

1A is competitive but Beechwood appears set to make a run now that Mayfield isn't there waiting on them. 1A will still be competitive though IMO.

 

2A will continue to be competitive as Mayfield, CAL, DeSales, Danville and Lexington Christian will all field strong teams next season and Mayfield may actually be #5 in the 2A preseason rankings.

 

5A....well....BG is in a really good spot right now. Well timed cycles of talent mixed in with a superior coaching staff and the fun will be in watching if anyone can defeat the Purples.

 

6A...Trinity is Trinity but Male won it all in 2015 and Scott County won it all in 2013.

Plenty of places to park for free if you don't mind walking. I've only paid for parking once in the years I have gone to WKU for the state finals.

You need to detect sarcasm. I don't pay for parking at any other high school game. At every other high school game, I pay $1-2 for soda and $2 for hot dogs and popcorn.

Lexington/UK didn't bid on hosting the games. Only WKU/BG did and that is why they are in BG.

Historically, there is always a concentration of 'power' in KY HS football. Its the way it is, the way was and the way it will be.

 

I still think less emphasis on just the State title is in order so that there meaningful measuring stick at a broader level. This is why I have advocated a two-tier 3 round each post season. Districts and region titles seem to have been lost in this latest setup.

 

Sometimes things change slow. Like 6A strengthening outside Jefferson County. Scott County won it a couple years back, Lafayette has now gone to title game back to back (I believe that may be a first for non-Jefferson school at 6A/4A level), and you have rising teams in NKY (Ryle, Simon Kenton, etc.).

 

Something things change fast, as PP92 indicates. Trinity now owns the State title count with their main rival in that metric now struggling unexpectedly.

 

The number of lopsided scores in the semis and finals are simply a factor the historical and somewhat normal concentration of power around programs or coaches and, yes, the six-class system.
