Yes I do think some fans think they know more than the coaches. There are also some bad coaches. Some of those coaches are HCs and some are on staff. The easy answer is getting rid of those guys in staff and replace them with better coaches. It's not that simple.

 

There is a ton that goes into coaching and a majority of fans don't know about. Hiring practices. What goes on in school. Even getting someone on staff. How practices work.

 

You can be a very knowledgeable fan Xs and Os but there is a lot more to it. How many fans know how to teach it. Rep it. Troubleshoot it. Fix it. The fan that hates the wing-t because it doesn't win games and kids don't want to play in it. Think the spread will fix it. What they don't understand is the overall coaching needed for it. There are some offenses and defenses that require larger staffs. Require certain skill sets that take years to develop. Changes things isn't as easy as some think.

 

Coaching and teaching are the two jobs that everyone believes they can do better but no one wants to do them

As someone that has been on a few coaching staffs (not football, not high school) and been a fan of all sports, I'd have to say that 8.5/10 times the coaches are right. I have been told by parents that their child is not playing enough, and I have seen coaches buckle and give more playing time to kids that probably should not have gotten it. I have also seen coaches sit kids because their parents wouldn't butt out. There are so many factors that go into whether a kid plays are not. In most cases, the best player plays. But it comes down to nobody that is involved in sports wants to lose. Kids parents that pull their kid and move them here or there because they can "be a star" are not helping anyone. When I was in High School I was fortunate enough to play on a very good basketball team, that really underachieved. I did not have the best relationship with the coaches and felt I was being slighted in playing time because of it, but I knew COACHES WANT TO WIN so instead of complaining or moving schools for more playing time I worked as hard as I could and knew that if I showed to be the best player they would have to play me, regardless of how they felt about it.

 

This one here blows my mind...are you telling me that a coach sat a kid because he didnt agree or like what the kids parents said? If so, then that coach is not in it to win it....:thumb:

I'm not saying I have seen a coach not play the best kid. But I have seen coaches take PT away from a kid that would have played a little more(end of half or garbage time minutes or a couple plays here and there) if their parents would not have demanded more PT. Just to spite the parent. Dealing with parents and pressure from other outside sources whether it is school donors or administration is often the most difficult part of a coaches job unfortunately. I know we hold coaches to a higher standard but at the end of the day their still human.

I wouldn't assume that just because they are hired and on staff that they are good coaches. If you've have played ball and/or coached at a high level; you know what right looks like. I wouldn't claim to know the ins and outs of game planning every week...but I sure as heck know what right looks like. Coaches are human....they don't have all the answers and know everything. To assume that; I think is wrong

Wait, what? Can you ask that again? Or expand.

This question and thread took me back about 11 months or so. Check out the Simon Kenton 41 Ryle 23 thread from November 13, 2015 and you'll see some familiar posters that knew a lot more than the Ryle coaches last year. Ironic.

 

Great point! And some of those same posters still think they know more than the Ryle coaches! Amazing considering the year they are having!

 

It comes down to this, Parents and there friends make up the vast majority of the fan base at any particular school. The majority of these people support the school, staff, coaches and team in a positive way. In todays culture the squeaky wheel get ALL the attention, especially with school administration. The powers to be need to grow a set and eventually the squeaky wheels disappear! Let coaches coach, players play and fans enjoy the game!

One way that parents enjoy the game is to "Monday morning quarterback." I have a lot of opinions about my team and what I see on the field. I enjoy thinking about how they could improve and what they could have done better on any given play or any given night. I like to talk to a few other parents about it.

 

But I don't take myself so seriously that I think I know better than the coaches. I present ideas about something to gain feedback and perspective from other parents. Occasionally I have asked my son about something I don't understand about the team and he'll give me a reasonable explanation why it isn't being done the way I thought it should. Good enough. And by doing all of this I am learning more about the game. That's fun.

 

So I may moan and complain, but in the end, I am there on Friday night giving 100% support to my son, my team, and the coaches. And I sometimes show up to work a Freshman or JV game in support of them.

I am a huge Mayfield fan who deeply loves the Cardinals. I have not had the time to read all the post in this thread due to needing to get down to the practice facility to watch practice. I can tell you that I have never missed a call, nor am I likely to ever miss a call. The last time MF lost was to McCracken Co back in early 2015, the game was in OT and MF had just scored and elected to go for 2 and the win but we failed to convert. I instantly changed my call to that of we should have kicked the PAT. Such are the advantages of a arm chair QB like myself and countless others. Should I be the coach instead of Morris? That's laughable, I am only a great arm chair QB not a coach. There is a big difference that any knowledgeable person knows and understands. Those that choose to really believe anything else are not knowledgeable at all and sadly there are some in e very program. Chief, you cant please everyone, nor should you, the vast majority know the difference and those that don't you shouldn't worry about.

 

I am still mad at Morris over that bad decision against McCracken last year, if only he would have consulted with me :laugh:

So if you saw on your studying of your films that your players couldn't tackle you would fix that or your corners couldn't cover you would change something or a defense could read your plays before the snap that you have to do something different. Or if you are platooning but you don't have enough good players for both sides of the ball.

So a great coach recognizes all this and fixes it before they loose games over it?

Is it possible for a coach to do all the right things, but not have the talent to carry out the plan?

I am not trying to antagonize anyone, but maybe someone on here can help me understand....do fans who see the ballgame each week, and possibly catch parts of a practice through the week, really believe they know better than the staff when it comes to how to use players, their strengths & weaknesses, the best offensive & defensive strategies, etc?

 

If a staff has a proven track record of success, is at practice everyday with their players, watch the practice video and evaluate their players, spend a boatload of hours on the weekend watching their game video, the opponent video, staff meetings to evaluate / discuss personnel & strategy....and obviously a group of extremely competitive men.... Do the fans know better than they do?

 

I have been around HS football my entire life and around some great coaches and players. I've worked more hours, days, weeks on this stuff than I could even begin to count. Of all topics, the one I would think I know best is HS football. But, if I am not on another school's staff and attend every practice or meeting, I would not begin to think I know better than they do on how to coach their team.

 

Maybe it is just fans having fun, and if so, that is what it is. Or, maybe it is for entertainment value which I could see as well. But , sometimes it seems like the fans really think they do know better.

 

I love HS football and Bluegrass Preps has been great in promoting it. It is all good. I am just curious what the mindset is on stuff like this.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I will say although that sometimes coaches do miss things that a "fan" may notice when it comes to some players. I say this mistake is usually made at the Freshman level...sometimes, not always. What I mean by this is simple. Some "fans" who mostly are some parents, and I'm not saying they are always talking about "their kid" per say, but may be familiar with other players that they have watched play for 8 years prior to getting to High School and know what the kids strengths and weaknesses are. When a kid get to high school, most of the time they are unknown by the freshman coach because the coach has never seen him play before in his life. Even if the kid was a stud throughout his pee wee career they can sometimes be put in wrong positions because the coach doesn't know any better and of course they may not want to hear it from "outsiders"

 

This happens at times, not saying it happens a lot but it happens. I seen it happen myself, and it wasn't my boy I speak of but someone who played with him for 8 years before getting to high school. He was put in a position he never ever played before even though he was a really good player at another position all his life. The coach already had an idea of where he wanted to put this player and it was sad to see what happened to the kid. He hardly played any during his high school career because he was playing out of position. He was a great TE in pee wee and was never even put on the offensive side of the ball for his 4 years of High School because the coach at freshman level convinced him he would be much better as a LB, needless to say the poor kid worked his butt off at LB his freshman year but just never was good enough to see the field until they sent the 2nd and 3rd stringers in for cleanup time.

 

So I do think sometimes especially when it comes to freshman players, that some coaches may not know the kid as well as they want to act like they do. When a coach has never seen a player play before, it isn't hard to put him in positions he may not be best suited for. It does happen.

Off topic a little, but seeing this made me think about the father of Lonzo Ball. Its a different sport, but can you imagine coaching his sons. I noticed that all the brothers have committed to UCLA. With this latest billion dollar shoe deal he wants for his boys, I would bet that his oldest would not be at UCLA had Alford not taken the other 2 (no matter how good or not). With that said, it is becoming more and more prevalent that parents try to live through their kids. Somebody needs to send these clowns the Manning 30 for 30 and have them watch at least 2ce per week

I don't know if the Manning 30 for 30 would be the best in this situation. Although the 30 for 30 was very kind to the Mannings, there was a ton of involvement when it came to Eli's drafting from dear old dad. Mannings medle as much as Mr Ball does with his sons, the media just treated the Mannings as if they were royalty and kept silence mostly about the meddling.
