Yeah, but they didn't. Appalachian State is one of the better lower division 1 FBS teams. I agree though, with some of the preseason hype the Vols should have not struggled for the win. Could be Appy State is better than advertised.

Yeah I believe they did, they have a true freshman kicker. That poor kid probably had it running down his legs.

Horrific clock management by App St. at the end of regulation. :32 left w/ 2nd & 1 at TN 33 yd. line and just burned their 2nd TO so they have 1 left. App St. throws a screen pass that is dropped for 4 yd. loss back to the TN37 to set up 3rd & 5. App St. does not call a TO b/c they want the last TO left to get the K on for a FG if they get in range. They call a pass, QB scrambles around and eventually dives out of bounds for a 1st down around the 30 yd line but 0:00 on the game clock just before he lands out of bounds. OT.

 

A - screen pass not the best call on 2nd & 1. Run your zone read that has been working most of the night up the gut and get a new set of downs. Spike the ball on 1st down once set (or run a play since clock stops on 1st down) and go on 2nd down.

 

B - once you're dropped in bounds for a loss on the screen pass, you call TO. It's 3rd & 5 with about :25 on the clock. Be prepared for both eventualities on 3rd down - don't make it, run the K out there and try a long FG with clock potentially running; make it and spike the ball on 1st down and calmly call 2nd down play

 

C - regardless, your QB has to know this is not the time for sandlot scramble play. Take your reads and if they are not there, get outside the pocket and chuck it to the LOS. 4th down allows for punt, long FG, go for it OR hail mary.

 

 

Also, TN QB got bailed out on his fumble at the 1 yd line in OT trying to go Superman. I think the rule should always be any fumble recovered by offense ahead of where it was fumbled should go back to the spot of fumble. Should not be able to benefit from fumbling. I'm looking at you Ken Stabler!!!

I may be wrong but I think that's the NFL rule but not college. I always get the two confused so might be wrong

Tennessee is very lucky to have won this game, they definitely showed that they aren't as good as they are ranked.
