June 15, 201610 yr Watching Fox News and announcer is saying exactly what I have been saying. Beach, beach chairs, hotel is yards away, no signage warning about gators, kid was not swimming but wading in a few inches of water, near a playground and near a swimming pool. Disney is negligible. Also the monetary value of a child is what their adult earning potential is, so that is one suit. Another suit will be the emotional damage to the parents who witnessed it.

June 15, 201610 yr Prayers to the family. So sorry the little boy died like this. If alligators were on the resort property the sign should have stated so. Lived in the south for many years, and know open lakes/swamps have them. They will even climb a fence. Maybe the family flew into Florida instead of driving and did not realize the danger.
June 15, 201610 yr I have a co-worker who was just there two weeks ago. She saw signs that say "NO SWIMMING" but there was no indication anywhere about alligators. She also showed me some pictures of a kids' play area about 30' from the water where this happened. Uh it's a body of water in FL. You don't need a sign to tell you a gator could be around. It's wildlife.

I guess the same reason the huge gator that made national news (that we have a thread here in Kentucky in our outdoor forum) on a very expensive golf course.

Agree Ref. I doubt if an alligator even crossed their minds. I believe they had been viewing a hotel-sponsored movie and went to sit by the water. From what I read, they weren't swimming or wading.

June 16, 201610 yr The lakes are connected to other waterways. Unless you put chain link fences in these water ways, you cannot keep the gators out. So yes, it is natural habitat. I had heard seven tributaries run into the lake.
