April 30, 201610 yr Candidly, I was extremely surprised when I heard it. Fun guy in front of public (i.e. Midnight Madness dancing, television show...especially with wife, most interviews). Me too.
April 30, 201610 yr Take away his first two years at UK and coach Mitchell has averaged 26 wins over the last 7 seasons, and this group just realizes he is a jerk. Most successful woman's coaches are tough on kids. All you have to do is read "Reach for the Summit" and "Geno" and you will see why they have won 18 national championships. They are not easy coaches to play for. Whatever the reason I hope Coach Mitchel gets it right. He has taken the program to a different level.
April 30, 201610 yr So a successful coach is a jerk, boo hoo wa wa, what are these players going to do when they hit the real world.
April 30, 201610 yr Author There is a major difference in being hard on kids and being a jerk. Big big difference
April 30, 201610 yr If you are going to be a jerk, you better set the example by working harder than you demand of others. Source says that has changed dramatically over last couple years and his jerkness has greatly hampered recruiting. Team morale has been at rock bottom, as players are losing respect. Bobby Knight was the ultimate jerk, but his players respected him and for many reasons (fear, love, awe of his success, or following the example of predecessors, or whatever????) would run through a wall for him. Mitchell knows he has to regroup personally, if it's not already too late. Jerk and invisibility aren't going to get it anymore. His personal priorities may no longer be compatible with SEC coaching demands, or at least the high demands on the Ky coach.
May 1, 201610 yr I've been hearing the "jerk" line about Mitchell for a few years. I don't know the man personally, so there's that.
May 4, 201610 yr He will take the first job that pays well as his time here is over, will not ever get back the respect he once had. This is a great job and great fan support and will have several great candidates to apply once it is open! He did a good job but needs much improvement in several areas that he may not want to change?
May 5, 201610 yr This is just to much. It is a problem. Players, coaches but maybe the right one has not left yet.
May 5, 201610 yr Author Alexis Jennings to Transfer from UK WBB Sophomore post player played in 33 games with 18 starts last season LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball head coach Matthew Mitchell announced Wednesday that sophomore post player Alexis Jennings has requested a transfer and been granted a release from the program. “I talked last week about needing to give our players a clear path forward in our program and it saddens us that Alexis did not see a path for her at Kentucky,” Mitchell said. “She alerted me today that she felt it was in her best interest to finish her career elsewhere and we owe her that opportunity. I appreciate her hard work the past two years and hope she finds success. “The turnover we have had has not been easy on our players and it’s critical that we give them some stability. Part of that is getting a quality staff in place and I am confident we are going to do that in the coming days. Our focus continues to be on the players in the locker room and the recruits that we are confident would make great Wildcats.” For more information on the Kentucky women’s basketball team, follow @UKHoopCats on Twitter and Instagram, or like Kentucky Women’s Basketball on Facebook.
