Your favorite Sweet 16 moment

1. Lofton goes off in the 2003 tourney; final game vs. Ballard especially. Lots of folks forget that St. Henry came within an eyelash of beating the Royals in the first game, IMO if Schmidt hadn't been out for a few minutes with an injury the game may well have gone the other way - just as Westsider said earlier in the thread. With no starter over 6'2", Mason County had a terible time handling the guy.

True, but it wasn't just that Schmidt was out for a few minutes. When he came back, he was at well under 100 percent effectiveness. I'll always be convinced that the injury cost St. Henry the game.

I was talking with a long-time 10th Region official a day or so before that game, and he correctly predicted that the Crusaders' ball-control offense, which was fairly typical of a lot of 9th Region teams, would give the Royals fits. They managed to keep the game at their pace pretty much the entire time. The only time Mason County made a run was when Schmidt was on the bench.

I picked St. Henry to win that game because they had two real good post players. Anyone that knew Mason County well knew they had trouble defending the post. The previous year, in the Sweet 16, Orlandus Hill of Paducah Tilghman torched the Royals for 33 points and 21 rebounds in the quarterfinals, and that was when Mason had 6-5, 230-pound G.G. Lofton in the middle. Mason had no one of that size the next year.

St. Henry had a bunch of good seniors in 2003. Schmidt, Fabiani, Vieth, Otte, Szcarnick(sp??), and also a good sophomore in Lageman. I was at that first round session game against Mason Co. I remember the first game of the session was kind of boring: Oldham Co. beat Powell Co. easily. But the second game was great.

My favorite moment was in 2001 when they honored 50 Sweet 16 legends on Friday afternoon. It was Kelly Coleman's first appearance at the State Tournament since he scored 68 points against Bell Co.in 1956.

In '05 I beleive when eventual state champ South Laurel thought the game was in the bag as they had the ball up one with less than ten seconds left, only to have PRP guard JaJuan Spillman make a steal and layup as time ran down... PRP went CRAZY! Only problem was that time had not run out... baseball pass to Walt Allen... lay in as the clock hit zeros... and everyone with a black jersey in that arena seemingly melted to the court....

#2 would be when CLo hit a couple threes to tie the game in the last couple seconds against Trinity...

1989.....Bryan Station vs. Warren Central on Friday night. Bryan Station is down 2 with 30 seconds to play and they're inbounding the ball on the side in front of their own bench. Michael Allen takes a three from the left side misses, BS rebounds passes to Michael again, he misses, BS rebounds kick it out to point guard who rotates ball to Allen again for a three, he misses, Nimbo Hammons gets rebound on weakside dribbles to the wing and skips a pass to Allen, HE HITS and BS goes up one. Warren Central calls time wth 9 seconds to go. BS intercepts inbounds pass and wins.

I know this isn't a girls mesage board but this one is too good. West Carter is going to win their first ever state championship and Kandi Brown is on the line with seconds to play, there is a sub waiting to enter the game for her. She hits both and leaps into her Dad's arms. That would be the one and only Hop. They embrace forever and enjoy the moment.

I remember that BS game, very good stuff.

Richie Farmer vs Ballard Allan Houston/Greg Bell ..drop 50 on Ballard ..what an exciting effort....

Just having the chance to walk out on the floor.

Freedom Hall 1975.

1983: Lex. Henry Clay vs Carlisle County, 3 OT game. Lex. Henry Clay won

35-33 on a last second put back.

1982 Championship game between Mason County and Simon Kenton. Royals led most of the game....then lost.:scared:

Actually, it was 1981.

Obviously my favorite is the Dewalt dunk that pretty well crushed any of the hopes Mason had of winning that game, but possibly my favorite game from that year was the Apollo win in the Sweet 16. Earlier that year Central played truly awful in the KOB against them and lost by 25. Some people expected the same thing of Apollo in the Sweet 16. Central came out and punched them in the mouth, going up 19-0 and it was over. That was when you knew that Central was a serious threat to take the whole shebang.

Actually, it was 1981.

So it was.:D
