Your favorite Sweet 16 moment

Featured Replies

Didn't Pulaski win the final in the last 15 seconds or so? Couldn't have been that anti-climactic, although I'm sure the Hazard fans were still ticked.

You're right. But I was so upset by the PRPv. Hazard game that I really didn"t care except that Reggie Hanson was going to Kentucky. I have actually heard Dave Fraley say that he was glad that he played PRP in the finals because he didn't feel that they would have beaten Hazard.

Pretty hands down for a mason county fan

1. Royals win first state title

2. Lofton makes crazy shot against Trinity.

But my all time favorite moment (besides these) was in 2004 at the fith-third holiday classic when Lofton Shoots from half court to tie the game just as Tubby Smith was walking out the door because he thought the game was over. OHHH NO! Not with Lofton in the game. Mason was down 3 and the inbound goes to half court, lofton turns and shoots and makes the shot. you have to understand this was the year Tubby wasnt giving Lofton much credit as a player. The whole Mason side erupts in a TUBBY! chant and he continues to walk out the door. I LOVED IT!

The 78 state championship game. As a kid setting in that endzone for that game I was hooked for life not only on b-ball but sports in general.

One other memorable moment was wathching Travis Ford attempt to pull his team through the semi's, he failed but it is still one of the best shooting performances I witnessed

I really liked that Pulaski team, they were a solid bunch. I don't know if anyone else remembers this but that year after the state tournament, Pulaski Co. played Indiana's state champion, the Marion Giants in a game called "The Natural", Marion had Jay Edwards and Lindon Jones both attended IU and both were very high recruits that season, Pulaski lost by a few points but it was a neat one time deal.

The throwing of debris on the court at the end of the Hazard-PRP debacle in the late '80's. I almost got hit by a flying umbrella.

Actually, it was a two-year deal between the KHSAA and IHSAA. Clay County played Marion in 1987, and I believe the game was discontinued after that.
I'd say mine happened in 2000 when we (Bishop Brossart) made it to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. We went on to play our opening game a game against Graves Co. and we won. Our record at that point was 19-13 and Grave's was 27-3. We won 47 to 40, due to the Brossart defense that we are all so proud of. That's my favorite moment.

Of the many, many, great Sweet Sixteen moments I have been fortunate enough to witness, the ones closest to my heart were from the game quoted above.

There were two: Jeff Clark driving baseline and scoring late in the game to stabalize an unstable Mustang lead and I'll never ever forget Scotty Ruth going backdoor to put it on ice or the din that emitted from the Brossart cheering section on that play!

Those are plays that you coach or follow a team your whole life for - and they will never be forgotten.

That was a pretty painful loss for Graves County and the 1st Region. It was a game we, as a region, expected to win.

That was hillarious, but what about the '95 region final when Billy Ray Fawns hit 3's at the end of regulation and the 1st OT to keep Montgomery alive. Indians hold on for 5 point victory in 2nd OT. Fawns-47 pts. Shawn had, what 39? One of the best region games I've seen. Right up there with maysville's last hurrah in '91.

Russ Chadwell (Caldwell?)-Clay County - driving baseline against Ballard and throwing one down one handed. Russ could flat jump out of the gym and definetly got up on that one.

he could fly.

I loved that Clay Co. bunch, I remember when they stayed at the LaQuinta when they had Pennington and Asher, very exciting moment for a young Neerfan, I love Pennington's game.

1.Richie Farmer, Russ Caldwell, Russ Farmer, Boxcar, and the rest of the Clay County players, leading Clay to the state championship in 1987....and they almost repeated the next year when Farmer was off the charts in the '88 championship game.

Clay County is my neighbor county, so I felt like I was a little bit of their 'mountain family' that year.

My dad was a 1950 graduate of Clay County High School. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 1987 and died in November 1987. I remember watching the Finals on television...maybe it was on KET. He and I had a great time cheering on the Tigers.

Some already mentioned that I enjoyed were Richie's 52 points, great night hard to believe they lost that game, Farmer and Allan Houston battled.

Rick Jones shot to beat Lex. Catholic and then he ran to Catholic's end and gave them the cut-throat gesture, CLASSIC.

Reggie Hanson and Pulaski County's run was a nice run.

The buzzer-beater shot to beat Daviess County a few years ago was a memorable moment.

Of course Chris Lofton put on a performance for the ages the year Mason County won it all, he was fascinating.

The buzzer beater against Daviess Co was something to see. Coach Turley had a big newspaper photo, hanging in his office, from the Lexington Hearld showing the ball in the Hop town players hand and the scoreboard showing 00.00

1. The other bunch of Clay Co. guys that could flat out play some ball was the 92' team. Lead by Shannon Hoskins, Robert Marcum, Mark Smith, Todd Pridemore, Chris McKissic, Todd Messer, and James Downey. Clay Co. played Ballard in the the first round of the Sweet 16 in 1992 and Ballard had DeJuan Wheat. Believe the game went to one or two overtimes and was back and forth the whole way. I think Shannon Hoskins led Clay Co. with 29 and DeJuan Wheat for Ballard was amazing with 38! I think?? Clay was beaten out by Lexington Catholic in the semis.

2. I have to say watching Breckinridge Co. in 94' or 95' was great. That was a fun team to watch!! I don't think anyone gave them a chance that year. Kind of reminds me of Hoosiers!!!

3. Hazard vs. PRP 1986 semis!!! Hazard had a guy by the name of Carl Wallace, he was a heck of a ballplayer!! Wished Hazard would have won!! Was an exciting game none the less! Oh yeah, I remember seeing the umbrellas being thrown along with everything else!!
