March 17, 201610 yr Who has he recruited to Louisville that was projected to be a one and done that didn't leave early? Just because someone is a McDonald's All-American doesn't mean they are one and done talent. How many McD's All-Americans DON'T go to the NBA after one year? UK currently has Poythress.... I'm all for poking fun at Rick but this thread seems like a bit of a reach. I do think it is in the best interest of UL and Pitino if he would just fund a hole to hide in until hooker-gate is resolved. He just seems to make a fool of himself every time he speaks.
March 17, 201610 yr Pitino can say what he wants. He tries to get the same players as everyone else, he just doesn't get the guys UK, Duke and Kansas get. If he could, he would. A coach would be stupid not to. He gets nice players, and builds good teams, but for him to act like one and done is beneath him is ridiculous. Gonna turn down Anthony Davis or John Wall? Get out of town.
March 17, 201610 yr Show me on the doll where Coach Pitino touched some of you guys at..... He rebuilt a program in on probation and in shambles at UK, took a bunch of Kentucky kids and Jamal Mashburn and almost went to the FF, won a title, almost won another one, and handed Tubby another team that won it all when he left for an NBA job. Why the hate? I don't hate Pitino at all, but if he ever touches me anywhere I'll slap the Dapper Dan outta his hair!:angrybird11:
March 17, 201610 yr Pitino recruits one and done types. Since he has coached at Louisville he has struggled to develop NBA talent. And has had just as much success as the next guy... So what does that say about his coaching?
March 17, 201610 yr If you take a 5 star guy for one year and compare that to a 4 star kid for 4 years, suddenly the talent discrepancy isn't so bad. Doesn't make Pitino a better coach or a worse coach because he doesn't have top of the line talent, IMO. He has players with experience, familiarity with the system, etc. that make up for the talent advantage. Louisville has talent, it just isn't top 10 draft pick from the moment you step on campus talent.
March 17, 201610 yr What Rick meant to say: "We are not Kentucky where we are successfully recruiting the one-and-dones."
March 17, 201610 yr And has had just as much success as the next guy... So what does that say about his coaching? That doesn't say anything about his coaching!
March 17, 201610 yr Pitino recruits one and done types. Since he has coached at Louisville he has struggled to develop NBA talent. I agree that Pitino recruits one and done types. Tre Lyles, Antonio Blakeney, and De'Aron Fox this past year. D'Angelo Russell, but I don't think anyone saw him as a one and done before the season started, including himself. This is funny the jabs about him developing NBA talent. You don't develop talent. You're born with it. All of those guys Cal gets are already lottery talents, and would be lottery if were eligible to go from high school. No knock on him. He recruits NBA players (and nothing wrong with that). Pitino does too, but isn't as good at recruiting as Cal. Both guys do a decent job developing players IMO. I think Cal's players are already more talented than Pitino's coming in, so it's going to take longer. I think Donovan Mitchell is a great talent and a first rounder in 2 years, but he's no Murray. So it's apples and oranges in the players, whether they're McDonald's AA or not. It took Cauley-Stein 3 years. Terry Rozier 2. Harrell 3. Poythress 4. so I don't think Cal is necessarily the best at developing guys, he just is better at recruiting the better guys.
March 17, 201610 yr With Pitino, it's all about Pitino. With Cal, it might all be about Cal, but he does a good job of selling that it's about the kids.
March 17, 201610 yr I've seen numerous players develop under Pitino. All the way back to Nazr Mohammed and Jamal Magloire. I would add John Pelphrey, Deron Feldhouse as well.
March 17, 201610 yr Perhaps Pitino is simply saying I don't recruit or sell players on being one and done like Coach Cal does.
March 17, 201610 yr I don't think he meant much by the comment. But if I wanted to pick it apart my theory as to what he could have been implying is a bit different than most if anyone has touched on. If I wanted to read into it and try to pick it apart, my thoughts would be that he is saying that he doesn't recruit one and done's so why would they need to have stripper/prostitute parties to get the players they are landing. In theory your 2 and 3 star guys like he mentioned are not going to be looking for "gifts" to entice them to go to a high level program, as they likely don't have a ton of high level options. However with the elite of the elite, they can go practically wherever they want and some but not all of them may want their elbow's greased before they make a decision.
March 17, 201610 yr UK vs everyone mentality.... Come on now....Give us some credit. There's a decent base on here that go against the grain with UK fans...
March 17, 201610 yr Just watched Cal's press conference today they were playing them again tonight and Cal got another jab in on Pitino about his first NCAA tournament with UMass Cal talked about playing Syracuse the first game and winning it on a banked 3. Then playing the Cats at the Spectrum in Philly Cal said he got a T for being out of the coaching box (which he said he wasn't) and might have coast UMass the game. The here is the jab. That game he said that game lead to Kentucky playing Duke and the shot by Laettner, Cal's exact quote was this "When Rick should have had the guy on the ball and took him off" and just smiled. lol
