South Oldham 81 Owen County 76 (8th Region)

Featured Replies

I suspect it will be one of those two at Rupp.

The way the bracket was drawn, the 8th Region winner has a shot at playing 3 or 4 games this year at Rupp. I don't think the 8th has won a game since 2012, right? When Oldham Co. made the State Final 4? Is that right?

What a great night of basketball. As I tweeted last night, it's nights like this is why we covered the 8th Region.

South did a great job of double and at times triple teaming Carson, while keeping Toftness and McDonald from scoring too much from the outside. Solid game plan and worked it well. Chad picking up his 3rd foul in the first half was a blow.

All that being said, you can take absolutely nothing away from the Rebels. 5peat 31st district champs, Back to Back 8th Region All "A" Champs, A Mr. Basketball Candidate, Record Crowds in Owenton and creating a buzz that the Region had not seen in some time. I know that there were folks from all over the State and beyond that came last night just to see Carson. That has been happening all year. Some around me said he could be on the floor for NKU right now and fit in nicely.

This is a special group of kids, and unfortunately their high school ride ended last night. It is a shame that one team had to lose. Such intensity and it was all left out on the floor. That's why I came down last night.......and so glad I did.

We wish all of the Rebels the best as they move forward in the next phase of their lives. Thank you for sharing these moments with us. They are ones that will not be forgotten any time soon.

I'd have to go back and look, but I think you are correct.

As for a deep run, the first round game (Region 3) should be winnable. The second round likely means Christian County, which might be a bridge too far. But with the right team, an 8th region team playing on Sunday is at least conceivable.

Exactly. IF the 8th winner advances, they'd be in tall weeds with the 2nd.

You guys at Owen County have a great team and an awesome fan base. Congratulations on a fantastic season. It's always tough to accept a loss in the post season for any of us. I still think Owen County is one of the best teams in the state and could have won the whole thing if they could have got out of the 8th Region. No one has a better player than Carson Williams, and his second half tonight was sensational. Since I've married into the Oldham County school system years ago, you know my heart was with South Oldham tonight. I wish Owen County was in another region tonight because I believe they could have easily won several other regions close to us (6th, 9th, examples) with the talent you guys have on that roster. I hate to see Carson Williams great career in Owenton come to an end. He will be a great college player and we will all miss seeing him in the 8th Region.

It's ok to admit when you're wrong about a team. As far as the 6th and 9th, you're being a little goofy!

You and @gchs_uk9 are 100% correct, I didn't realize that Christian Co. would be looming in the 2nd game. That is a tough-putt to be sure.

This place IS Kentucky High School bball

I was really hoping to see Williams at the State Tournament, but most of us knew South Oldham would be a tough contest. Coach Simpson keeps getting it done.

Same here. Sure am looking forward to NKU's season next year as they're getting a good one.

Thanks OC for a great ride. Probably the most heartbreaking defeat in the history of the school and the one chance we had to make the Sweet 16. Also, a huge blow to the Mr. Basketball chances of Carson.

Congrats to South Oldham. Great team and coach. Hope they do not take for granted yet another Sweet 16.

Hope not, sounds like he had his usual monster game.

I agree and loved watching this team. Covering both Indiana (from Indy on south) and Kentucky bball (area from louisville to covington area) this team was one of my all time favorites. Good ppl around owenton and that community. From what I know the kids are good kids and excellent students. I hate that they lost when Rupp was a very realistic goal but they'll all be fine and always remember this season as one of the most fun times in their lives. They would be a decent team without Carson but he gave the team that 'it' factor that made them fun.

As for my assessment of the game, calls came and went both ways. Some good, some bad like all h.s. games. It was a combination of good defense and being tentative. OC played their hearts out but after watching a dozen or so of their games this year, something was off. They seemed worried to not make a mistake. I did seem like they "held" Carson to 38 bcos there was never a rhythm in their offense. McDonald and Toftness were never able to get comfortable 3 point shots. credit to SO bcos their perimeter defense was nice. They use alot of screens and backcuts on offense that created some mismatches.

Williams had to really work for those 38. What a good steal for NKU. To me it sems he would be a starter by his junior yr. @ a Notre dame-type school.

That picture does a nice job of capturing the atmosphere. If you weren't there, and I'm pretty sure the entire county of Owen was, you missed a special night. Great game. South just does what they always seem to do at the Roy; win with great coaching.

Have to admit though, I was rooting for Owen. First time I've seen the Williams kid play this year. He's a great player but the way he handles himself on the floor tells me he's a better person. He's been raised and coached right. What a great representative for Mr. KY Bball.

I have enjoyed watching Carson. Truly have, but some of you so overrate him it's awful. He's got terrific athleticism and is strong around the basket. But to play at a "Notre Dame" type level he would have to improve his ball handling immensely, develop a perimeter game and improve his lateral quickness. Is he going to guard the 3 at the next level in the ACC? He's not tall enough to guard the 4 or 5. Come on folks, Carson is headed to a great fit for him at NKU. I hope he has a stellar career there. I'm sure he will continue to improve and develop into a solid contributor. I'm excited to follow his progress and see his game mature and develop there. Like everyone else, I love his demeanor. Just a great attitude. But wow, we need some reality checks on this board when it comes to player evaluation at the next level. Sheesh!
