Is this a decision Ramsey would have made without consulting with the Board of Trustees?

He did what he did in hopes that the NCAA will not implement another post season ban going forward. By self punishing the program with a post season ban this season I imagine he thinks that part of the punishment is out of the way.

 

That said, a post season ban next season would severely hurt the program. It would kill them in recruiting and also open up the possibility for current players to transfer out. Not to mention making it harder to find a coach that wants to walk into that mess when Pitino is let go. From what I can gather, he is willing to throw the current players under the bus to help the program going forward.

 

As long as the NCAA does not hand down another post season ban, they can get rid of Pitino this year, get the coach they want and move forward. Is it slimy and unethical, sure it is, but all he cares about is doing what's best for the program, as that is what is best for him if he wants to keep his job.

 

I understand that is why they did it. But I hate self imposed bans - because it is unfair to those that are being punished by the school and its the school that should have to pay the price.

I don't disagree at all, it's slimy and unethical imo, but that's just the way it is. Like you said he is trying to save his own job and to do that he has to do what is best for the program going forward. I'm a UK fan, obviously, but I completely understand why he did what he did, part of his job is damage control.

 

I don't like it one bit and a part of me hopes it comes back to UL in the rear so they will do what's right and get rid of him. Another part of me realizes that pretty much every other program in the country would be doing the same thing in this instance. I know most on here won't believe it since I am a UK fan, but I hate that this is happening to them. However I do wish UL would have done what is right and dump Ramsey, Jurich and Pitino and move forward in their own way. But we all know that ain't happening, nor would it at pretty much any other program.

I'm not sure, but by being the president he probably could have made the decision on his own. Of course he would still have to answer to the board after such a decision.

If I understood correctly the Board was informed of his decision 15 minutes prior to the press conference.

I haven't posted anything on here yet. This is obviously horrible news for the players, supporters, and fans of Louisville. I feel horrible especially for all of the players on the team who had NOTHING to do with what happened when it did. It's awful to vacate the postseason, but I think they did it the right way. I'm on board with Pitino being gone, which is hard to do. I have liked him tremendously as a coach, but it's time for him to go after the season's over, if not sooner.

While I don't like Ramsey one bit, IMO, he did what was best for the program going forward. You and I hashed this out through our posts yesterday and to be honest, I think both of us would agree that this was something that needed done for UL's sake moving forward. You have your reasoning behind it and while mine is slightly different, I think we both understand why they self imposed punishment as quickly as they did.

 

What I don't understand is why so many people are upset about it. In your opinion, do you think that the belief among the fans is that UL could have avoided any punishment if they fought it? Because otherwise, I don't know why the fans are so upset. IMO, UL's own investigation showed them enough that they felt like they need to act quickly on this and go into damage control mode with the NCAA. I would have to assume otherwise they would have held off and waited on the NCAA to present their findings.

 

Like I said I don't like Ramsey one bit, Jurich either for that matter. But in my opinion Ramsey did what is best for the program on this one. However he did throw the current players under the bus. Maybe that's what the fans are so upset about?

McGee ain't talking, he's the one facing the NCAA coaching ban. It's always the assistant coach that gets banned. Ask Dwayne Casey and Claude Bassett. There's no doubt in my mind that he felt pressure to land players and he thought buying them "things" would enhance that process.

Pitino has said that McGee had no part in recruiting players and wouldn't have received credit if a player did sign. They way Pitino was talking there was zero incentive for McGee to do any of this.

I still want to see the findings before I’m on board with Pitino needing to go.

Even if he didn't know about it he should have. He had Minardi Hall built so he could better control his program. This is the second major scandal under his watch. Time to cut ties.

Mainly because he is the AD, which is responsible for anything that involves athletics, yet he never catches any flack for bad decisions. IMO he is implicated in this as much as Ramsey or Pitino either one. His sole job is to take care of the athletics department.

I don't live in Louisville so what the media does there doesn't concern me one bit lol. He is the Athletic Director though, right?
