February 6, 201610 yr Should a school try to lessen the penalty? Specifically, in a situation like this? My point is that NCAA sanctions are supposed to penalize the programs that break rules. Any school with major infractions should have a tougher road or else there is really no point in the rules. If the NCAA decides to punish Louisville, it should feel like a punishment. That's why I think this self-sanction is really bad for the current kids who were not a part of it. Let the University suffer after these kids have left. That would be what would really deter this kind of crap. Sanction for next year and immediately release players of their scholarships if they want to leave. That way anyone that wants out can get out or not come. No school is honest enough to do that though. Too much money invovled. That's my thought as well. Why even have punishments if you let the school dictate the punishment.
February 6, 201610 yr If your right, expect it to be the end of the NCAA as we know it. Which in turn would mean zero money for them. The football side of things have already figured out they don't need the NCAA to succeed. If the NCAA cannot be consistent with punishments they hand down in other sports, basketball will be the next sport that figures it out. If not for being a regulatory substance to college sports, what purpose does the NCAA even serve? If they let UNC off the hook, the NCAA will be done and over with. IMO, UNC will get hammered. Like you said the NCAA likes money. They will lose a lot more money if everyone realizes they are negligent and not worth being a part of, than if they take whatever hit they will lose from UNC, which would be minimal, by the way. The idea the UNC controls the NCAA due to money is laughable, they have a lot more to lose than UNC if they don't start treating all schools fairly. You could very well be on to something. But I honestly don't think anything extreme will come of that. Maybe it's me being a fan that's blinding me from it and believing it. But either way, only time will tell.

A lot of people, UK fans included, think nothing will happen, essentially because nothing has happened yet. What most people are forgetting though, is this is an investigation that spans 20 years. That's something the NCAA has not had to deal with yet, so it will take some time. Like someone else said, it would be wise to follow UL's stance and implicate yourself and self impose sanctions, in hopes that the NCAA doesn't hit you hard. However it doesn't appear that UNC will do that, which will likely leave the NCAA no choice but to hammer down on them when the time comes. That said, it may take 2-4 more years before anything happens, but mark it down, it will happen if the NCAA wants to stay in existence. I won't get chippy about it with you, but the stance that a lot of UNC fans take is similar to what you posted earlier, which to me, is absurd. I get it, some UNC fans believe they are above the law and can do whatever they want and get a slap on the wrist because UNC brings in money to the NCAA. The idea alone is frightening and everything against what the NCAA is supposed to stand for, but whatever.. But guess what, when you total up a few of the nobody's money (small schools), they would be bringing in as much or more than UNC does per year for the NCAA, don't forget about what the other blue bloods would add to the total. So in reality, the NCAA would be making an extremely bad business decision if they don't hammer down on UNC (assuming they actually did what has already came out) and would likely end their entire existence as a whole.

Common sense says that UNC does make them quite a bit of money, but no where near enough that you just give them a slap on the wrist and expect the other schools that have had minor infractions to just take it and not revolt. I can imagine there are quite a few idiots on those. Either way, it's obvious I'd like nothing major to happen but it very well could. I can appreciate a level headed UK fan.
