Someone correct if I'm mistaken, but when Cordia was punished, Coach Rhodes was fine with it until the KHSAA told them that they were banned from the All "A" as well as post season and that's when he and Cordia took and appealed the KHSAA's ruling and got it overturned.

With the omission from regular season play last year, perhaps, just perhaps, Cordia is running a tighter ship, and Rhodes is taking a different path to build his dynasty.

My school lost the championship game in 1990 to University Heights. They had a 6'7 D-1 signee from Spain and two starters from England. I don't remember this much ruckus being said by anyone back then. Our boys battled them the best we could but they won in the end. But we were happy that we got the runner-up trophy. No complaints.

In 2000 we lost in the semifinals to Highview Baptist who started a big kid from New Zealand. No complaints from our school or fans that I can recall.

Cordia is by far not the first school to use players not from their area or school district. It's been going on in many places, some more than others, probably since the '40s or '50s. There's players on teams all over the state this year that moved into schools specifically to play basketball or other sports. Some came on their own and some were persuaded. We all know that. And before anyone tells me if I know of any violations report it to the KHSAA, well I don't know of any. But I've been around long enough that I know reality.

 

Cordia was penalized by the KHSAA for their violations, pretty severe at first but later amended to allow their team to play some games during the season, just not KHSAA post season games. These All A games were not post season tournament games. Their players and team were all eligible to play. I don't know what their game limitations are but I would assume they're close to meeting their allowed quota. Someone mentioned they had a game scheduled with Mercer but I would have to think that their limit (I think it's 15 games) is close to fulfilled.

 

Congratulations from me to these young men on winning their state championship. I hope it was a great experience for them that they will long remember.

But the from looking at stats from most of the games it looks as if Cordia forced teams to take to many bad shots and forced them into the tempo they didn't wanna play.

Among the penalties imposed by the Commissioner are:

 

Suspension of the Cordia HS boys’ basketball team from playing scrimmages or contests during the 2014-15 regular and postseason, as well as the 2016 postseason. During its suspension, the school would be permitted to conduct regular season practices from October 15 until the first allowable day for district tournament play. Included in this penalty is a stipulation that representatives of the boys’ basketball team with eligibility remaining may transfer to specific KHSAA member schools without penalty;

 

Wait....so the whole Cordia team could have transferred to specific KHSAA member schools? These boys chose to stay at Cordia and play an amended season with no possible postseason play and folks still want to hate on them? Wow.

Folks would be foolish to believe that the school they root for weren't hoping some of those players ended up at their school. To say it nicely.

I will always consider this Cordia championship accompanied by an asterisk.

 

Considering the blatant disregard for regs and any attempt at a measure of decent common courtesy last year, I have trouble accepting this group as a bunch of homegrown boys from the Hazard area, who started at Cordia as freshmen, and have been developed over the past couple of years into a championship caliber basketball team. If that is the case, I not only stand corrected but humbly apologize and will wear a Cordia "A" State Champs shirt for the next week, but I am confident that neither is the case.

 

Answer me YES or No to the names of the five starters for Cordia today - Ajanee Chisolm, Zeke Biallas, Kareem McDonald, Oumar Keita, and Anthony Nelson. Do these boys have roots in the Hazard, Kentucky area and did they start as freshmen at Cordia High School???

 

If the answer is Yes - Then congrats to the Lions!!!! Send me my "A" State Champs shirt.

 

If the answer is No - then the teams that lost to the Lions this week were taken out by a coach and team who have seized on an opportunity of finding a private school with student housing, in which to gain athletic (basketball) advantage.

Spot on. It's all very sad. The lines between high school basketball and AAU are becoming more and more blurred every day. Not just the aspect of "super" teams being assembled with players from to and fro, but also the physicality of the high school game keeps becoming more and more like AAU. Have some pride and build a team with the players you have in your system and the officials can also start calling games like they should at the high school level and not like it's an NBA game. Very disheartening.
