First of all as an HC fan, Ben Weyer is the best player in the region hands down. Second of all, I want to give credit to the HC team after Their best player went out. They battled all the way til the end and actually cut it to 3 or 4 a few times. Both teams were unbelievable from the free throw line. NCC played great defense all night and could double Schrand after Bezold went out which really hurt HC. Good luck to NCC down state! Best wishes to Tyler Bezold for a fast recovery!

That's a real leap of faith believing that NCC could beat HC this year at full strength. I've watched 5qtr's with both teams at full strength and HC had the best team and the best all around player...

 

E. Anderson played 2 minutes in the first game. So you've seen 10 minutes of both teams at full strength... Assuming Weyer is 100% healthy now. (which he isn't)

NewCath wins Ninth Region at All 'A' Classic

 

For the fourth straight year, Newport Central Catholic will represent the Ninth Region at the Kentucky All ‘A’ Classic state tournament.

 

Ben Weyer led the way with 26 points as the Thoroughbreds beat Holy Cross 70-52 in the finals of the All ‘A’ regional Saturday night at Lloyd High School. Weyer was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after dominating at both ends of the court.

 

“He probably had a bigger impact on the defensive end than he did the offensive end tonight,” NewCath coach Ron Dawn said of Weyer. “I thought the last three or four minutes, (Holy Cross) didn’t want to go in the lane. He does a really good job of going straight up, and even if he doesn’t block the shot, he changes the arc of it and gives them something to think about.”

 

NewCath will face the winner of the 11th Region in the first round of the state tournament next Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Frankfort Convention Center.

 

“Obviously we want to win our fourth in a row,” Weyer said. “But we just have to take it one game at a time.”

 

“Our first round match-up is going to be tough,” Dawn added. “We’re (likely) going to get Lexington Christian in the first round. We’ve played them the last two years down state, and both times those were our best games. Overall, I feel like this is the strongest the All ‘A’ state has been.”

 

Holy Cross beat the Thoroughbreds at home back on December 22, 65-60, but Saturday night was a much different story.

 

NewCath led 29-21 at halftime, and remained in control the entire second half. The Breds pulled away with an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter, giving them their biggest lead of the night, 62-44, with 2:03 to play.

 

Weyer broke a 15-15 tie and jump-started the Thoroughbreds’ key 11-0 run to start the second quarter by scoring eight straight points. He buried two threes, the second of which was heavily guarded, and added a steal and breakaway dunk in between. John Ludwig capped the run with another three, putting NewCath up 26-15.

 

 

Derrick Barnes scored Holy Cross’ first points of the second quarter with 3:38 on the clock, ending a four-minute and 55 second scoring drought. The Indians lost leading scorer Tyler Bezold early in the period when he jumped up to catch a pass and landed awkwardly on an opponent’s foot, turning his ankle. He didn’t return, and emerged on crutches with his ankle wrapped after halftime.

 

“It definitely affected them,” Weyer said of Bezold’s injury. “He’s a great kid. I really like him. I actually talk to him a lot. We’ve been texting the last few days leading up to this game.”

 

The Thoroughbreds took a 29-21 lead into the locker rooms.

 

Holy Cross junior Will Volpenhein started the second half by burying a three, and Hamilton Scott made a pair of free throws to draw the Indians back within one possession by the seven-minute mark, 29-26. However, the Thoroughbreds responded with a quick 5-0 run to remain in control.

 

Particularly with Bezold out, NewCath found a lot of success with its defensive game-plan of double-teaming Holy Cross guard Leighton Schrand on ball screens and trying to get the ball out of his hands. Schrand is the Indians’ top creator, and without him making plays their offense stagnated at times.

 

“Our game-plan was just to get the ball out of Schrand’s hands, because he killed us last time,” Luke Moeves said. “He’s a good player. We doubled ball screens and then we had to recover to their shooters.”

 

NewCath led 44-36 after three.

 

With three minutes left, Ludwig scored on a layup in transition to spark the Breds’ final big run of the night. Luke Moeves added a pair of free throws and a baseline drive, and Stephen Pangallo hit a pair of free throws to make it an 18-point game. The teams played the final minute and a half with their reserves on the floor.

 

Schrand led Holy Cross with 17 points.

 

“He carried them,” Dawn said. “I told him when we were shaking hands that he kept his team in it. And he did. He did everything he could. That kid is a hell of a player.”

Sounds like New Cath and Weyer are legit. I hope to see them meet up with Owen County next Sunday afternoon. Weyer vs Williams are 2 of top 3 mr bball candidates

Excellent question that maybe shines a clear light on tonights outcome.

 

No, HC'S persistence in keeping with an ineffective press that led to at least 18 easy NewCath points was a HUGE factor in this loss. HC'S coaching needed to be better.

Haha and I've done that how? I could easily say HC wins regardless. But without it ever happening nobody will know. So, please tell me how I don't have any basketball IQ? I'd love to hear this.

It would have been a bit closer with him, but the outcome would have been the same. Wish the Camels could play HC again on a neutral floor.

 

Camels would get taken to the woodshed either way.

Best of luck to NCC in Frankfort. They were the better team tonight. Ben Weyer is the best player in the region IMO. I feel really bad for Tyler Bezold. Kid works hard at his game and for him to watch 3 quarters of the game and not compete with his team was tough for him. 18-15 NCC when he went out.

 

Congrats to all the representatives on the All Tournament Team. Also thanks to Lloyd HS for treating us great all week for radio broadcasts.

It's a shame the tone this thread took. I like both teams and players on both squads, particularly Weyer. Kid is a gamer and what goes unnoticed in the box score is that teams have to focus SO MUCH energy on stopping him, that it creates easy chances for his teammates. NCC got lay ups and great looks from 3 all night because HC was so consumed with limiting Weyer. He is a difference maker on the floor, and I was glad he played, after hurting his wrist earlier in the week. An HC win over NCC without him would have been empty.

 

Having said that though, Bezold going out in the second DEFINITELY affected the game. Both teams are solid, but HC loses its biggest offensive threat and heart and soul. I believe HC and NCC AT FULL STRENGTH ON A NEUTRAL floor will be a great game, hopefully we'll see sometime soon
