Senior discount day at Hickory Sticks. Shot a respectable 82. No doubles; only 6 on the card was on the par-5 first hole. 11 bogies, 6 pars and a birdie.

Best shot of the day was a blind 50-yard third to a par-five; inside a foot. Disappointment of the day was hitting my tee shot 20 feet behind the hole on the par-3 fourth, then leaving the putter cover on twice and bogeying.

My favorite 3 day stretch of the year is coming up starting tomorrow. This weekend is the Member-Guest at Cynthiana CC. The tournament is named in memory of my Dad and the members allow me to play as an honorary guest for the weekend.

Monday I will be teeing it up at the University Club in Lexington in Jacob Tamme's fundraiser called Swings for Soldiers. Lots of awesome things happening at this event. Here's a link with some details

I have taken the driver out of my bag and left in in the trunk of my car. I just can't hit it. Thinking about maybe digging on old Taylor Made driver out of the garage and trying that, but for right now I am using my new Adams Tight Lies 2 Ti 3 wood. I average 12-15 yards further with it than I was either of the drivers I have been using anyway, and sometimes am hitting it 20+ yards further than anything I was doing with driver. It's not SUPPOSED to work that way of course, but for right now that's where my game is. With that said, I have hit several legit 240+ yard drives with the 3 wood. It's not an every swing occurrence of course, but when I hit this thing in the mouth it really goes. Hit one about 255-260 last night in league on a short par 5, was helped by a decent little tail wind and got the ball up in the air just right for it to help, but also landed about 5 feet off the fairway in the rough. 5 feet more to the right and I would have gotten at least 10-15 more yards of roll in the fairway. Unfortunately the last 3 holes played into that wind. But I did shoot a respectable 40. If I had taken the time to look closer and repair an old divot mark a chip just off the green on the short #8 par 3 would have probably gone in as it was tracking straight into the hole until the ball hit the old mark about 8 inches in front of the cup, slamming the brakes on and coming to a stop about 3 inches from the hole. A 39 would have been nice.

Speaking of my new Adams 3 wood, it comes standard with a high end Mitsubishi shaft in it. Really good looking shaft with a silver and blue color scheme. So I just looked it up on line to see what the shaft by itself would cost. At Golfsmith, the exact shaft, by itself right now cost $250.00. With a $25.00 rewards point bonus discount, I paid about $55.00 for the club on Rockbottomgolf. I think I got a pretty good deal.

I 3 putt more than anyone on Earth.

Speed control drills, then several minutes of putting from 5 feet and in.

My new Ping irons, driver, 3 wood and 5 wood have really improved my game. They cost me an arm and a leg, slightly over $2,000 which included the fitting at Man O War, but it has been worth it. I was averaging around 83 at our course in Booneville, Sag Hollow, but now my average has dropped to 76. I shot a 72 yesterday playing in a $5 match with some buddies....not bad for a 62 year old playing from the 6,150 tees. I had 4 bogeys, 4 birdies, and the rest pars.

Heard a golf coach this weekend say this, "It's likely not your putting that needs work, it's your iron play into the green". Um, that would be me.

For me it's more like "your iron play trying to hit the green".

There's an old adage - the best iron players hit their long irons high and their short irons low.

Missed 3 putts last night all within about 4 feet, all in succession on 7, 8 and 9. All par putts and literally just outside of "gimme" range. What should have been a 37 turns into a 40. Oh man I was steamed.

I played over the weekend and shot a 94 (47 & 47). At least 4 3-putts, maybe more...but none worse than the 150 par 3 where I landed a pitching wedge 6 inches from the hole. It came to rest about 7 feet away and I 3 putted for bogey. Absolutely brutal.

It feels like you're talking about my last round. I'm glad to see someone putting up scores I can relate to.

I'm shooting consistently in the low 90's & leaving a lot of strokes on the course. If MTGL can fix my putting stroke, I should be able to get into the high 80's.
