August 2, 200620 yr Read some things on Ward. Some scouts were curious as to why he was still in low A-ball considering he was a college grad. The competition there is not as good as high A-ball especially when you have a college grad facing high school newbies, or the majority of them. Reds have held onto their top SP in minors. Bailey, Pelland, Cueto, and Wood.
August 2, 200620 yr You can hang last night's loss on Freel and Clayton...period. You can bang on the first-base ump all you want, but that is a play that 30 SS at the Metro this week would make easily. He had all day and no excuse for such an awful throw. Freel's was a tough play, but that ball was is in the pocket of the glove and has to be caught. That is frustrating. Clayton has to make that freaking play. ===================================== Rare good line from Chris Welsh: "...make a mistake to Dunn and you get a new ball..." Classic.

Agreed, but I would add the Pitchers must keep the ball out of the middle of the plate, location was not good last night for the staff....forget about this one, get ready for today.
August 2, 200620 yr The Dodgers DFA Jose Cruz Jr. today. He may not be a bad pickup for the Reds, who are in need of a 5th outfielder.
August 2, 200620 yr Boston Globe: "Other possibilities could include Mike Lieberthal of the Phillies, Javy Lopez of the Orioles, Henry Blanco of the Cubs, Josh Paul of the Devil Rays, and Kelly Stinnett, recently released by the Yankees." No mention of LaRue... http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/08/02/varitek_out_at_least_a_month/

August 2, 200620 yr Sidenote question: Why hasn't Homer been moved up to AAA ball with his success in AA? Most likely because he still has only one pitch he can throw consistently for strikes...
