Mayfield vs. Newport Central Catholic, the State's Old Money of Class 2A will make their annual pilgrimage to the State Finals. These two programs go to Bowling Green so predictably rumor has it they have partnered with Wydham to reserve hotel rooms like it was a time share.

This is Mayfield's 7th consecutive trip to the State Finals and their 8th in the past 11 seasons. Newport Catholic will be visiting the promised land for their 4th consecutive year and their 9th time in the past 11 seasons.

The Cardinals enter after laying to waste the Western Region in their own mini-State Championship tournament culminating in the ultimate slaying of 2-time Defending 2A State Champion DeSales. The Breds enter having survived a defensive stalemate against fellow small school royalty Danville.

These two last met in the 2005 1A State Finals where Newport Catholic rolled to a 42-7 win.

Will Mayfield parlay this game into a 4th Straight Title and in the process relinguish NewCath to a Buffalo Bill-esque 4th consecutive State Runner-up Finishes?

Which Runningback will cement his name as the best in Class 2A? Jacob Smith of NewCath or Trajon Bright of Mayfield?

I don't root for NCC very often. But let's go Breds!!! End Mayfields dominance of NKY

Two teams that just never go away. Well coached with deep history and tradition. Should be a great game.

Pulling for the Breds but they really need to pick it up and bring their A game

I think the Breds have more of a chance than some will think. I didn't know about them after their game against Beechwood earlier on, but they have played much differently since. After tonight's game against Danville, I think their chances may be good. Danville had plenty of speed on both sides of the ball, which anyone who has watched Mayfield over the past few years knows they do too. Good luck to both teams.

2005. Enough said!!

Revenge game

I don't think of it as a revenge game or anything like that and doubt anyone else here does either. That 2005 loss in Mayfield's only loss to a NKY school that I am aware of. Mayfield is 2-1 VS. NCC having played 3 times and all 3 were for state titles. The 2005 thrashing of Mayfield by NCC, in my opinion, had a significant impact on the Cards program direction atleast on offense where we saw the need to get away from the 3 yards and cloud of dust and run the spread.

I began to take note of NCC and did so before the BW loss, which was a surprise not so much in that NCC lost but the margin of victory by BW. After the BW game I sort of dismissed NCC and as sure as I did they flip the switch back on. A very dangerous team. I still feel like the Cards are the favorite but NCC has again emerged from the early season ashes into a major threat that not many if any saw coming

Sorry breds . After 5yrs watching Mayfield it will take perfect game by NCC. And i don't think that will be enough to beat Mayfield

Cards 35 - 21

Hopefully Jacob Smith can take over the game and get tge the win.

Breds HAVE to play mistake free and keep stupid penalties to null or at the very least a mere minimum.

Know nothing of NCC. What's their deal? Strengths? Style?

I have to agree with you on this one. I I graduated in 05 and I think with sped we had it was being utilized with proset offense. It was very predictable. I almost believe if we were running spead back then and utilizing the more of the players on the sidelines, there would have been more state championship appearances. I appreciate that quote too from the legendary toothpick.
