Newport Central Catholic's road comes to an end and they know it, just have to go out and play the game, because this Mayfield team is a team of destiny, Mayfield schedule has them ready for this kind of game and NewCath hasn't seen the kind of competition Mayfield has, Mayfield wins.

We are playing good sound football right now and I'm not sure New Cath can stop us. They definitely have the capability and have played on the carpet as of lately but I don't see it happening. Defense wins championships and that's what we have. A staggering defense. 27-14 Mayfield

NCC played Belfry, Beechwood, Cooper, Scott, Connor, and Danville. That's pretty good competition. Now, if you want to talk about results against that competition, that's a completely different can of worms.

NCC will have to play a game similar to the Danville game. Hang around within a score and then hope to get something going late. Tough task but so was Danville.

For those that don't know, when the girls from the all-girls school joined us boys in the 83/84 school year, the Bishop added Central to Newport Catholic......against EVERYONES wishes. :banghead:

Hmmmm, if I was in an all boys school and they said "We are gonna add "Central" to the name AND a bunch of catholic school girls", I would take that deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

This happened my Senior year, went from getting up 30 minutes before school started and having major "bed-head" when I got there, to getting up at the crack of dawn, showering, getting the hair ready, and all that goes into looking presentable to females. Had it happened my freshman year I might agree with you.

 

Plus your forgetting.....when girls enter the picture......MAJOR DRAMA all day long. :facepalm:

What To Watch:

Mayfield

- Trajon Bright continues to do his thing since returning from a substantial injury. NewCath is solid on Defense but have been gashed by hard running backs against their strongest competition. Bright will need to gash the Breds a couple times to free up the Offense as Mayfield should have a noticeable advantage in speed.

- Landon Arnett is the consumate game manager and has been the catalyst in the Cards 2015 Playoff Push. The constant factor in the vast majority of the Mayfield Championship teams has been a QB who can make the big play. The afforementioned speed advantage will not be any more visible than the matchupo between the Mayfield WR"s and the NewCath DB's. Arnett to Kennemore is a potent combo and can change the scoreboard any point on the field at any time.

- One of the most overlooked parts of this Mayfield team is Placekicker Sidney Hendon. Herndon is a very reliable weapon and a luxury for a 2A Team to have. Mayfield is very well coached in Special Teams and Hendon's range and consistency should not only make sure Mayfield doesn't leave points off the board, but may add a few that would otherwise be left off.

 

 

NewCath

- For anyone who watched the Semi-Finals performance against Danville it felt pretty clear than for 3 and a Half Quarters the Admirals seemed to control the game. NewCath is littered with guys who have played in Bowling Green for multiple years and they just have a knack for making plays in clutch time. Jacob Smith gets the press, as he is one of the finest RB's in all of Class 2A, but Patrick Henschen is the pivot point. NewCath needs their tall Junior signal caller to make plays with his arm and keep plays alive with his feet while making good decisions.

- The MVP's of the playoffs for the Breds may be a suprising set of name. Trent Wrobelski has been phenomenal on Defense and as a Punter and John Harris has been the compliment piece on Offense and has also made his presence known on the Defensive side of the ball. The Breds have posted an unprecedented amount of Defensive TD's and may need another one to help spur an upset against a stingy Mayfield Defense.

- The best player you have not heard of is NewCath's DT Maleek Lawrence. Lawrence will not wow you with his size, but his motor is relentless and he has made a habit of living in opposing backfields. Imagine the Tasmanian Devil, Lawrence is a force to reckon with and will need to make several negative plays to help keep Mayfield in 3rd and Long situations.

 

Analysis:

This is a game where there is absolutely no denying the pedigree or big game experience of either participant. Mayfield's playoff path has been phenomenal and it is now old news that Mayfield is peaking at the right time and playing by far their best ball in late November. NewCath was a marked underdog against Danville but found a way to win. Don't expect this to be a game where nerves result in uncharacteristic fumbles or busted coverages. Whoever wins the 2A Title will do it seeing the best shot of the team across the way.

 

Ultimately what will decide this game is 1st Down and 3rd Down. Newport Central Catholic is not built to beat you facing 3rd and Long, and they rely on their running game to keep them in manageable yardage situations where their entire playbook is open. Mayfield also works their best when they can gash you on First Down so that the yardage is manageable enought hat they can take calculated deep shots with their Play Action passing game. The team who is the most successful on 1st Down and subsequently converts the most 3rd Downs will win this game.

NewCath's biggest advantage will be their size, but the trade off as mentioned is Mayfield will have a noted advantage on the edges with their speed and big play ability. NewCath's Special teams have been a bit of an adventure at times as well.

Outstanding breakdown ATLCat! I like our chances on paper, but also know it has to actually be played and as you pointed out, neither team will be intimidated by the moment or the atmosphere, having been there multiple times before. Should be a good game. I smell a four-pete
