I talked to folks who watched the Murray/OC game. I was told that

1. Murray made no adjustments the entire game that would have been effective.

 

Mayfield's specialty is adjustments

 

2. Murray quit playing when they got down.

 

Mayfield gets more ferocious when they get down....just ask Murray.

I think Mayfield has come from behind 5 games this year? PT, McCracken Co., Corbin, Murray, and Caldwell Co. Won 4 of those games, lost 1 in O.T.

As for the game...I think the Aces obviously roll into this matchup as the underdog. On the road vs the #1 team in the state who never looses at home is a tall task. I cant claim to know a ton about Mayfield other than what i can see on Hudl, but i do think Catholic stands a decent chance in this one.

 

Two things i really like for Catholic in this matchup.....their run D vs Mayfield's running game & their passing attack vs Mayfield's DB's. Ill start with the run D. While a bit undersized, Catholic has two absolute studs in John Mark Boarman and Nick Blair at the linebacker spot. Michael Mills is a DB who flies around all over the field and is very underrated. He was phenomenal in run support a week ago. The Aces do a great job of getting multiple hats on the ball. They were out sized two to one vs Murray and i felt like they dominated the line of scrimmage. I also feel like Catholic can present a ton of problems when they pass the football. RZIII is one of the best QB's in the state. He was absolutely locked in vs Murray and i expect much of the same from him going forward. He distributes the ball to 3-4 different WR's that know their exact roles in the offense. He makes good quick decisions that makes them very difficult to defend. Even when he is pressured, he does a great job of extending plays with his feet, while keeping his eyes up field. I also believe Shamari Morton will be the best athlete on the field Friday. Shamari has REALLY elevated his play lately. He has 10 touchdowns in the last 3 games and i am expecting him to continue this trend. Jonathan Garner is the X factor for Catholic at the RB spot. He has been a great dual threat out of the backfield. If Catholic protects the ball and plays smart football, i think they can win going away...

We watched some more game film last night and I must say I came away a lot more impressed than I was after watching the Dav Co game. I just hope your off on your final score

Listened to the Homers podcast. Not getting much respect from the announcers. Both have Mayfield losing , one by 14. They seem to think Mayfield doesn't respect OC. I'm beginning to think its the other way. Time for a trip to the woodshed.

I would have to disagree. I think we highlighted how much respect not only we have for Mayfield and their tradition, but how much respect they've garnered nation wide for their all time wins. Just because we picked OCath to win, doesn't mean we don't respect Mayfield. Heck, we could be way off base and Mayfield could kill OCath, but predictions are what they are....predictions. Just based on film, I think OCath is better. We'll find out Friday. But make no mistake about it, we highly respect Mayfield, War Memorial, and the football program.

The McCracken film vs mayfield nuff said and malfunction vs Caldwell helped mayfield. Very cheap pass interference call in that game too. It was a screen. Mayfield is vulnerable just like everyone else.

Yes MF got beat by McCracken. And yes there were lots of bad calls in the Caldwell game, but they came back from being down 21-10. Showed a lot of guts/grit. So we can quit pretending like they should have lost that game.

Mayfield has more talent then OC overall. PERIOD! I will say OC will has the best athlete in Morton.

 

Catholic vs Daviess county. Why everyone brings that game up? 2nd game of season. Lost an OL and he came back at about week 9. Similar to mayfield getting Bright back. They also dropped 12 balls and had 12 penalties, although the crew that night hates catholic. Still managed to play in OT. Does not say a lot about DC having Catholic play like dog crap and still have a chance to win.

 

So mayfield had kids out vs McCracken. Let's hear what mamma says on the subject. I want to hear from some mayfield fans.

 

Mama says Mayfield got beat by McCracken because days big boys and pushed us around. Kidding, but really MC just wore us out with their size. The run game killed MF. MC was getting 8 yards a pop on run plays, and we didn't get enough pressure on QB. He had all day to throw. MC has a pretty talented team, so that loss isn't that much of a black eye. Really its one of those games that serves as a good measuring stick, win or lose. If we can bang with MC then we can bang with most any team in 2A.

Outside of the 2013 game (Murray was dominate), OCath has been it's own worst enemy in those games with dropped passes, penalties, and turnovers that lead to points for the Tigers. Besides 2013, I think OCath had the better team each year. Last year was a great example. OCath pretty much dominated the game, but were undone by dropped passes and turnovers. In the playoffs, those kinds of mistakes will send you home, especially against a team like Murray.

 

In the past OCath's run defense, has been suspect, but this year is more on the side of being a strength. I see two similar teams in a game that will come down to who makes the fewer mistakes.

I agree with everything you said here, except the bold. And Im really asking your opinion more so than saying you are wrong. Both games I watched of OC (Daviess and Murray) were against teams that ran TE/FB offensive formations. You guys stacked the box with 8 guys and left one safety high the majority of the time. And since Murray and Daviess were so vanilla and ineffective with the ball, you could get away with it. MF is a different animal, running spread formations mostly where you wouldn't want to stack the box. A very different strategy than Owensboro, Murray, and Daviess. How does that change things for you guys?

 

I couldn't agree more with respect to their offensive prowess. Mayfield better be ready on D.

I have really enjoyed this thread so far and can't wait to see the rest throughout the week. Can someone who is familiar with OC please tell me what the upperclassman looks like on the team? Is the team overall younger or older class-man? I think senior led group would be a force to reckon with. I can't help but wonder how hype and being prepared for big playoff game will play out for each team. Personally MF has seen the confidence of others teams carrying allot of momentum into the playoffs, which naturally should give them confidence, but I think the difference is experience. What's your thoughts?

Murray tried to run the ball most of the game, but OC put 8 in the box and shut that down. And when they did try to throw, the Murray QB would scramble and get sacked a minimum of 10 yards behind the LOS. And Murray offense can't operate in 3rd and long. They looked tired in the second half for sure. I was watching their pass rush and those guys were whooped, not even trying to get back there. All in all, Murray has never been a mentally tough team. They fold like a lawnchair under pressure...

Bright in the backfield is a dangerous weapon, but Mayfield has 4 WR's who will take it to the house. Mayfield can and will pass the ball.

 

On a side note, the weather looks great for Friday night. Around 50 degrees at game time, 4 mph winds, with no chance of rain.

OC see's a spread every day in practice, so trying to stop the run in the spread is not out of the ordinary with them, although Bright is a special RB and it will be more challenging. Based on what I see OC's defense is very versatile being able to hop in and out against different looks with really changing their personnel. Daviess County had a great gameplan and OC was playing some different DL in that game that don't play currently. Also, it was 2nd ever game for their starting freshmen DE and Soph OLB against a senior heavy Daviess County team.

 

OC plays seniors at QB, RB, and 2 WR positions and 1 OL. They play 1 SR DL, MLB, and 2 senior DB's. Very experienced in some spots and young in others, which I believe Mayfield is very similar looking at their roster. Can't wait for this game... Also for some of you Mayfield fans getting upset at @devils58 and ApolloFan, keep in mind their show is called "The Homer's".
