This should be an awesome matchup. I would like to pick OC with the upset, but I don't see Mayfield losing this game, especially at home. Mayfield 28-21.

OC fans, who do the Cards most remind you of on your schedule that you played this year?

I watched film on OC vs Daviess and OC vs Murray playoff game. A few observations...

 

OC QB looks very good. He has great feet and he sees the field very well. Doesn't lack for arm strength. Can make all the throws. And his line doesn't need to give him much time as most of his reads are quick. #3 is his favorite target. They will go deep to him 4 or 5 times a game (he scored on two of those in the Murray game I think). If he gets behind the defense he is gone. The kid has wheels. #20 and #80 were the other two receivers I noticed catching multiple passes. These guys run good routes and seem to have solid hands. #25 HB isn't a big kid, but plays big. Reads his blocks well and shows a penchant for knowing when to bounce outside. Line play seems to be their weak link on offense, but again they throw quick passes and the running lanes are wide (spread offense) so those guys don't have to be world beaters.

 

Its hard to get a read on their defense. Both games I watched were against run heavy teams, and quite frankly, both Daviess and Murray have terrible offenses. Not to mention they used fullbacks and tight ends in the majority of their formations, so it wasn't that hard to guess what they were going to do. OC D-line was small, but very quick off the line, and very active. They didn't give up many plays on the back end, so both Murray and Daviess had to put sustained drives together, which they failed to do most of the time.

Owensboro Catholic has built a brand of "air raid" football that was brought in by Mike Lawson in the 2001 season, and carried on by current coach John Edge. Mayfield took the step from 1A to 2A this season and the Cardinals have been their usual dominate self, only losing to 6A McCracken County. While watching the Cardinals on Hudl, I was surprised to see how much Mayfield actually threw the ball. QB Landon Arnette is a very capable passer and has nice targets in senior WR's Kevin Caldwell and Micheal Walker. The meat and potatoes of what Mayfield wants to do goes through the run game and that starts with Trajon Bright. He reminds me of Owensboro's Landon Board (even wears the same #22). Defensively, Mayfield runs a 3 man front and uses their athletic ability to get to the ball.

 

Owensboro Catholic is lead by one of the best QB's in the state of Kentucky in Ray Zuberer III (aka RZIII). He's passes for a state best 2,920 yards against only 5 interceptions. If you drop 7 or 8 into coverage, you get to try and tackle the #9 rusher in 2A in Jonathan Garner, who has rushed for 1,136 yards. RZII has reliable targets in Weston Jacob (3rd in 2A) and Shamari Morton (5th in 2A). Morton is one of the most dynamic players in the state of Kentucky. Mayfield SHOULD NOT kick or punt the ball to Morton. Remember Cardinals, you've been warned. On defense the Aces are lead by senior John Mark Boarman who has 1,213,133,133 tackles this year. Just kidding but it's well over 150. The kid is a machine and his LB partner Nick Blair isn't bad either.

I was expecting to see freak athletes, and a few big linemen (ie Micah Jones), but was shocked to see what appears to be a regular looking high school team. However, one thing did stand out to me about Mayfield. The Cards are EXTREMELY well coached. I'll even go as far as saying the Cards are more a product of coaching than raw talent. That's not a slight at Mayfield because I feel the same way about OCath. Both of these squads are very well coached. They both execute, take proper angels, and do all the little things you want to see from any high school football team.

 

This game is in Mayfield. That alone is worth 7 points due to the tradition, history, and fan support the Cards get. OCath, in my opinion from looking at film, is more talented than Mayfield. I know that might ruffle some feathers, but it's what I see. Trajon Bright will be the best running back on the field, OCath will boast the best QB, WR, and LB Friday night. Those are positions that matter. Funny things can happen in games like fumbles, dropped passes, or penalties. Yes #3 had some nice special teams plays, but during punt returns he also likes to grab the ball at the last second and take off, which can catch the defense off guard but also cause turnovers. Not to mention, the punting ability for OC is downright atrocious. Not much control or distance. That really hurt them in the field position battle. I know they aren't used to punting, but they will more frequently starting Friday night, and if they win, moving forward.

 

I can agree that OC QB is a notch above MF QB, but as far as them having better WR and LB, that is very debatable. Kennemore, while not as fast as #3, is every bit as effective (SAVY is how I would describe him). The McCracken film vs mayfield nuff said and malfunction vs Caldwell helped mayfield. Very cheap pass interference call in that game too. It was a screen. Mayfield is vulnerable just like everyone else.

For OC I love #3 and the QB, outside of that I think MF is equal or has advantages in most spots. Line play, the kicking/punting game and team speed are Cardinal appear to be Cards advantages at least from the game films watched. In your analysis, I found it interesting that you would overlook or at least fail to mention our #1 receiver in Kenemore instead mentioning our #2 and #4 receivers.
