* The TV test pattern would be on in the morning until broadcasting started at 6 AM or 7 AM.

Well, except for the station that landed the lucrative 5am Farm Report account.

Remember when you could talk on a payphone for a LLLLOOONNNGGG time for just a dime? And you could sit down in some of those phone booths?

Yeah, but your idea of "shopping" is to see what's in the back of the truck on any given day. For instance, when was the last time you actually paid for something like, say, printer parts? :lol2:

Nice thread.

Randoms:

Calling someone's house and getting a busy signal. Or worse, expecting a call and having someone in your house on the phone. Led to many fights between siblings nationwide for many years.

When several yards in the neighborhood would have baselines and base areas worn into them as the summer went along from all the wiffle ball, etc. games.

When if you wanted something to go, you'd have to go into a place and order carryout, no drive thru's.

When people used their cell phones as phones.

When you went to a record store to shop for music.

When a weekend night "in", included getting to the movie rental place in time to get the hottest "new release."

Shopping for rental movies at a movie rental place, period.

Getting on the internet meant AOL and meant you'd hear that weird phone buzzing, as your land line connected to the internet.

8-Track tapes and how they'd break or get all tangled up in the player, and sometimes you could get lucky and successfully tape them back together to get them to play again.

When Pong was a big deal and a major TV video game break though.

Previous to cable TV there was a service called "On Tv" that also had a premium naughty pay to view option, but if you didn't have it you could still hear all the naughtiness while watching it through the squiggles, and had to be quick changing the channel if your parents came in the room because there was no mistaking why you'd be watching squiggles.

When you'd load a stack of your favorite 45's on your record player and one by one they'd drop down automatically for uninterrupted listening pleasure.

When you'd excitingly review out loud to your friends who you got in your new pack of baseball cards while chopping on a thin pink square stick of stale nasty tasting hard powdery bubble gum while drooling and wiping your mouth with the back of your hand because naming your players took precedent over getting the wad of gum to properly congeal in your mouth, and if you bought more than one pack you'd still continue to load your mouth with more gum where the players you were naming came out of your mouth in an even more garbled sloppy mess of unintelligible sounding names.

Remember that?

When the baseball cap that you wore all summer long stunk to high heavens from you having sweated in it everyday, all day, day after day 'til there was a nasty yellow ring on the inside rim of the hat.

I remember paying 200 bucks for our first VCR.

Remember when you went to a game at CovCath or went ice skating and stopped at Jerry's afterwards?

That Jerry's was where my wife and I had our first date.

When you got your milk from the milk man, and your eggs from the egg man.

Our milk came from Trauth Dairy in glass bottles until we stopped because it eventually was cheaper to buy it at the store.

Our egg man would come buy every Friday night after supper time in a green truck and say "Egg Man" as he entered our yard. He'd wear the same outfit and have a coin changer on his belt. I'd always be amazed how quick he was with operating the coin changer. Some months of the year he'd also tempt us with fresh produce that were so much better fresh from the farm than they were from the grocery store.

Every once in a while we'd have a blind man go door to door through our neighborhood selling brooms where my Mother would say that they were the best brooms you could buy.

When the whole family would sit out in the yard on nice summer evenings bonding and looking up at the stars, or playing the game Riddly Diddly, or singing songs while trying not to engage ourselves in too much of an involved way with the regular neighborhood alcoholics walking back and forth to the corner liquor store for another pint of whiskey, or some of the neighborhood mothers chasing their barefooted children up and down the hard sidewalks with belts and threats of a good whoopin', or the excitement that would cease the peace and quiet when cops showed up to break up drunken fights down the street, and my parents would eventually give the order that it was time to go back in the house.

I can't tell you the last time I've watched kids play wiffle ball. We used to wear out wiffle balls. When they broke youd tape them up and REALLY get some long home runs.

Like someone mentioned, my backyard also had the basepaths and pitcher's mound worn out. Parents didn't care. We were OUT of the house.

When we got bored with that we'd break out the gloves and rubber baseball and play pickle.

Sidenote: My wife is from Pittsburgh. She tried to tell me the game is called "rundown." Married her anyway.

1st bolded - same here and we played our games in long narrow shotgun styled yards between brick houses in the inner city and adjusted the rules accordingly because of our non traditional playing area. Lots of collisions running to the one and only base past the pitcher who was fielding your ball that was banging back and forth from one brick wall to the next. Over the iron fence was a home run unless the outfielder was quick enough to exit the yard and catch it before it hit the ground. As you stated the more taped up the ball was the more home runs, but also the more broken windows from it now being harder on impact.

2nd bolded - We called it "Runners" and the bases were from one metal water meter lid on the sidewalk to the next. Sometimes the rubber ball would get loose and roll all the way down the street and in some bad luck cases right into the sewer to be lost forever. "Mom can we have a quarter for a new rubber ball?"

We have a wiffle ball tournament every year. It's a lot of fun. We just had this years a few weeks back.
