September 14, 201511 yr Author Classic running joke from when the first models started coming in with dimmer switches on the turn signal was how much of an increase in car accidents were occurring among new car drivers in Indiana. Kept wrecking because they were having trouble getting their foot up to the steering column to dim the lights. :lol2:
September 14, 201511 yr I saw a Mr. Softee truck the other day. Unfortunately it was in a junk yard. Do they run anywhere any more?
September 14, 201511 yr I saw a Mr. Softee truck the other day. Unfortunately it was in a junk yard. Do they run anywhere any more? I see them all the time driving through Newport.
September 14, 201511 yr I see them all the time driving through Newport. Glad to know they're still around, about the only similar experience I shared with my kids when they were growing up.
September 14, 201511 yr ..when cashiers possessed the math skills to actually make change? ...when TV commercials for cars actually talked about the number of cylinders, the cubic inch displacement, the type of transmission, etc. instead of how many digital gizmos the car has on it? ...when what goes on here only went on in Sweden or Denmark? ...when an attendant pumped your gas and cleaned your windshield----and maybe checked your oil? ....when you snuck about 4 people in the trunk at drive-ins (movies)? ....when your mom and dad insisted that you respnded to every adult with "sir" or "ma'am"?
September 15, 201511 yr I remember when there was a bar in PRP that had a walk up window where you could buy quart size containers of your favorite mixed drink. ...or so a friend told me...
September 15, 201511 yr There were only 3 networks and if the President was speaking the whole night was ruined. You went to the kitchen to make a phone call You made a call and had to call back later if no one was home TV shows advertised being in color You were afraid to talk back to any adult and if you did it to your parents you didn't sit comfortably for a while.
September 15, 201511 yr Remember phones with party lines? Remember when TV's had only 3 channels and the National Anthem played every night when channels went off the air? Remember when you could order something C.O.D? Remember when you not only had to play outside all day, you wanted to? And, this one makes me really old...remember sitting by the radio when they announced 18 year old boys draft numbers by birthday?
September 15, 201511 yr * There were at least two papers (Morning and Afternoon/Evening) in most major cities. * The KY Post would publish the NKY High School Football section with schedules and rosters and pictures. * The papers would publish the AM radio stations of all the teams like St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, etc. that you might be able to pick up their games late at night. * The Reds had Teen Night, Farmers Night when players would milk cows, Fan Appreciation day when they gave away multiple cars. * The TV test pattern would be on in the morning until broadcasting started at 6 AM or 7 AM. * Sunday morning were cartoons followed by Notre Dame Football Highlights (...."after an exchange of punts we pick up the action later in the third quarter...") *There was this new restaurant that had Singles, Doubles, and Triples. *Taking a carton of 8 empty pop bottles back to the store so you did not have to pay the deposit for the carton you bought. *The newspapers all had a college or pro pick the winners contest and you had to mail in your picks and the post mark had to be early enough for you to qualify * Reds tickets were the actual color of the seat you sat in. And the ticket office at the Stadium had certain sections and the ticket outlets in Lexington or Louisville had other sections. * ON TV was a Pay subscription that had two movies a night (I think at 7 pm and 9 pm) and maybe one at 11 PM on weekends. * At the race track you had to get in a line for a window that sold $2 Win Tickets, or another one that sold $5 Win Tickets. Or a $6 Combo ticket ($2 across the board). You had to go to a specific window to cash the tickets. And they wrote the prices on a chalkboard. You could not bet on Horse races from around the country.
September 15, 201511 yr The sign outside your motel advertised "Free CBS". It was "I Like Ike" and not "_____________ sucks". Spin the bottle. Phone numbers started with two letters. Party lines. Pay phones at every gas station. Doctors who did house calls (My pediatrician did. And his name was not Hippocrates).
September 15, 201511 yr Author *Taking a carton of 8 empty pop bottles back to the store so you did not have to pay the deposit for the carton you bought. When I was in high school, part of my job at the local grocery store was to separate the returned bottles. You had Coke, Pepsi, 7-Up and it seems to me RC Cola as the bottlers back then. Every bottle had to be separated and put in with the proper group.
September 15, 201511 yr Author Remember when cereals actually used the word "sugar" as part of their name? Sugar Smacks...Super Sugar Crisp...Sugar Frosted Flakes.

September 15, 201511 yr Saccharine drops. Gluten-free food that didn't cost three times as much as regular food. Profs smoking in the classroom (Chris Offut had a great line about Morehead State University. "High school with ashtrays"). Change back from McDonalds's when you bought a coke, a burger and an order of fries. Personally, I miss the Dairyland Buffet about 10 minutes from where I grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore. $1.69 per person with a carving station, shrimp newburg, all kinds of seafood. Growing up reading stuff like "Brighty of the Grand Canyon" and "Misty of Chincoteague". Listening to a ball game without an erectile dysfunction ad every few minutes. Shipwreck dances. Watching nautical-themed kids shows. Captain Chesapeake, Diver Dan, and Captain Tugg. Local muscular dystrophy carnivals.
