Remember when...?

Do you remember when the Internet was slow, but everyone thought it was super fast?

Sorry. I'm apparently a toddler, but I don't know anything you all are talking about. Except Druthers. I used to go there to get a kids meal around every Halloween, just because it came in a candy bucket for Trick Or Treating. I might still get one if they still gave out the buckets.

I can't tell you the last time I've watched kids play wiffle ball. We used to wear out wiffle balls. When they broke youd tape them up and REALLY get some long home runs.

Like someone mentioned, my backyard also had the basepaths and pitcher's mound worn out. Parents didn't care. We were OUT of the house.

When we got bored with that we'd break out the gloves and rubber baseball and play pickle.

Sidenote: My wife is from Pittsburgh. She tried to tell me the game is called "rundown." Married her anyway.

We have a wiffle ball tournament every August here in Ashland to help raise money for kids in Moyo, Uganda. We usually have 32 teams, and play on two separate fields. You should consider making the trip next year, and bring you a 4 player team.

For the record I agree with your wife. We always called it "rundown" as well.

This paragraph basically explains my summer from age 6 until I graduated HS. Whiffle Ball every day from about 9am until we couldn't see anymore. We even played at the rehearsal dinner for my wedding.

Curb Feelers on your car.

Like others we played wiffle ball constantly, eventually moving to tennis balls as we could use those longer.

Well, except for the station that landed the lucrative 5am Farm Report account.

I can't remember how many times on Saturday morning I woke up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons and started my day off watching the Farm Report waiting for cartoons.

1-Hour Photo booths in the middle of a parking lot

When the neighbor dad would get on my dad about us kids wearing out a huge bare spot (2nd base) in the yard right on the property boundary. Dude, your son plays in the games too! By the way, can we get some balls out your gutter, we're running low.

-I remember playing Whiffle ball all summer long (we kept stats)

-I remember sleeping with a box fan in my window during the summer

-I remember hoeing in the garden for hours at a time

-I remember breaking beans by the bushel

-I remember when all 3 networks (yes that's all there were) showed cartoons from 7 or 8 on Saturday morning until noon...then it was the Baseball Bunch and then Joe Garagiola and the MLB gameof the week.

-I remember walking to school for 6 years, because school buses didn't serve my school.

-I remember Burger Queen, Burger Chef and Rax

-I remember when their were no national pizza chains, McDonalds, Wendy's or Burger King in town.

-I remember having 50 minutes of freedom for lunch every day of high school as we had no cafeteria. Druther's got $2 and the Arcade next door got $1 every day, on rainy days I'd go to the sandwich truck in front of the school and go to chess club.

1st bolded - same here and we played our games in long narrow shotgun styled yards between brick houses in the inner city and adjusted the rules accordingly because of our non traditional playing area. Lots of collisions running to the one and only base past the pitcher who was fielding your ball that was banging back and forth from one brick wall to the next. Over the iron fence was a home run unless the outfielder was quick enough to exit the yard and catch it before it hit the ground. As you stated the more taped up the ball was the more home runs, but also the more broken windows from it now being harder on impact.

2nd bolded - We called it "Runners" and the bases were from one metal water meter lid on the sidewalk to the next. Sometimes the rubber ball would get loose and roll all the way down the street and in some bad luck cases right into the sewer to be lost forever. "Mom can we have a quarter for a new rubber ball?"

Yes! We played "runners" also. But we always got our ball out of the sewer though. Most times there was enough water sitting in it to crawl thru the front while a couple other guys held our feet or we would lift the heavy sewer lid and hold the guy's legs while he fished the ball out. AND NOBODY GOT SICK!! Boy I miss those days!

Where I grew up, Sunday was ladies day at the local carryout liquor store. Mom would buy wine on Sundays and get 10% off. Kinda like "anti-blue laws".

..when cashiers possessed the math skills to actually make change?

...when TV commercials for cars actually talked about the number of cylinders, the cubic inch displacement, the type of transmission, etc. instead of how many digital gizmos the car has on it?

...when what goes on here only went on in Sweden or Denmark?

...when an attendant pumped your gas and cleaned your windshield----and maybe checked your oil?

....when you snuck about 4 people in the trunk at drive-ins (movies)?

....when your mom and dad insisted that you respnded to every adult with "sir" or "ma'am"?

Nowadays their math skills are totally pathetic. It's so sad.

Remember phones with party lines?

Remember when TV's had only 3 channels and the National Anthem played every night when channels went off the air?

Remember when you could order something C.O.D?

Remember when you not only had to play outside all day, you wanted to?

And, this one makes me really old...remember sitting by the radio when they announced 18 year old boys draft numbers by birthday?

Remember the "Andy Griffith" episode with the two old women talking on Sunday and Mr Tucker couldn't make a call out?

When you got your milk from the milk man, and your eggs from the egg man.

Our milk came from Trauth Dairy in glass bottles until we stopped because it eventually was cheaper to buy it at the store.

Our egg man would come buy every Friday night after supper time in a green truck and say "Egg Man" as he entered our yard. He'd wear the same outfit and have a coin changer on his belt. I'd always be amazed how quick he was with operating the coin changer. Some months of the year he'd also tempt us with fresh produce that were so much better fresh from the farm than they were from the grocery store.

Every once in a while we'd have a blind man go door to door through our neighborhood selling brooms where my Mother would say that they were the best brooms you could buy.

You beat me to this one. I remember as a little kid the milkman bringing my chocolate milk in those glass bottles and leaving it on the front porch. LOL

Fun times!

WOW! My sister and I used to do that. We would get up as early as 5am and watch cartoons all morning. I usually had to get up really early to catch two of my favorites, "POPEYE" and "CASPER the FRIENDLY GHOST." :)
