There are time in a county as big as ours that even with several Deputies and Troopers out backup could be minutes away. If you are going 100 miles per hour away from town chasing someone it is going to take a while to catch up.

 

I'll guarantee that every officer's fastest speed driven has been to assist or back up another officer in trouble and not in a high speed pursuit as most would think.

I watched the shooting of the news lady and the camera guy, I'm done watching/listening to that stuff. It chokes me up to think about it without the audio to make it worse. The evil in this world is real.

I started watching the video and turned it off when he first raised his gun. Just couldn't watch it. Don't think I can listen to this either.

My dad was a rookie with KSP in about 1968. Only trooper in Casey County. He and the county sheriff.

So the article states that back in 2013 he left a traffic stop and the police just issued a criminal summons for him. This time he flees the area during the traffic stop and Trooper Ponder pursued Shanks. Makes you wonder what may have happened if officers had gone after him 2 years ago. Not at all saying this could have been prevented but rather it seems like his behavior was consistent.

I've tried to wrap my mind around the entire chain of events. If just 1 of many little things was different, Trooper Ponder would likely still be here. Had the pursuit lasted another 2 miles, he's got backup ahead of him. Had he stopped him a few minutes earlier , the other trooper first on scene would've been right behind him. Had his car came to rest at a different angle, the rounds would've had more barriers before striking him. The only conclusion is this was God's plan. I pray that this incident with a model LEO and this Individual from the Ferguson riots is the wake up call God has sent our country to stand behind those who's purpose is to serve and protect.

Very well said, also frustrates me that the armor is not able to withstand the shots. I know at close range it's very challenging, just frustrating.

Like anything else, the cost. It would cost about $15,000 to install bullet proof glass in the windshield and front windows per cruiser. Then you are adding a lot of extra weight which will hurt the MPG. And most departments are tight on budgets as this now.

I think it's a bit cheaper than that now and newer tech has allowed for the glass to be much lighter than in the past. But you are right on target with the budget being the biggest issue for most departments. Most have trouble updating their fleet of cars in a timely manner let alone spending 20-25% more of added protection.

There are times where I don't care if a line has to be crossed. This would have been one of those times. Just write it up so everyone is protected.
