Not there ever would be, but if there were some sort of trial concerning the circumstances of KSP using deadly force, I would lie thru my teeth just to get on the jury so i could exonerate them. I wouldn't care if he was asleep when they shot him.

2.) KSP is understaffed. Because of their rigorous academy standards, they rarely graduate over half their class. As a result, there are always openings. Post One has been understaffed for years. There are two troopers assigned to Trigg and Lyon Counties where Trooper Ponder worked.

 

3.) Backup was on the way. Several deputies were responding and monitoring his chase. They were among the first on the scene along with two KSP troopers.

 

4.) The suspect was stopped for speeding and had a suspended license. They have connected him to the Ferguson protests and a Facebook photo of him with Al Sharpton. These social media sites have since been removed. It's unknown why he decided to fire on the trooper unless news comes out later that he had a warrant, etc.

 

5.) Trooper Ponder was wearing his vest. He was struck near the shoulder where the front of the vest and back of the vest meet.

 

6.) While the suspect was posting snapchat videos, police were pinging his phone and finding his exact location. Not a smart move.

 

7.) The suspect fled into a subdivision surrounded on two sides by water and one side by the interstate. A perimeter was set up by dozens of officers, some who came from counties an hour away, on the interstate and near the subdivision. He wasn't going to run for long.

 

8.) Trooper Ponder had already applied to transfer back to his home near E-town. It was going to happen in a few months.

 

9.) Trooper Ponder is the first KSP trooper to be shot and killed in the line of duty since 1988 when Johnny Edrington was killed in a Laurel County traffic stop. They never found his killer.

 

10.) One last thought. Listen to the scanner audio of the chase. The KSP academy and the Dept. of Criminal Justice academy will use that audio as a training tool. Trooper Ponder stayed calm, gave details of his location, gave details of the suspect, gave details of how the suspect was fleeing, and he remained calm the entire time. The 10-minute audio gives you a glimpse of how good of a trooper he was.

Awesome post, it is very concerning how thin the force is in some parts of the state.

 

Do you know if the projectile hit the vest at all? Going into the shoulder region is a freak kill, it would have had to have hit a bone and changed directions.

I hope I find out who the civilian is that stopped to help Trooper Ponder. I'd like to shake that mans hand.
