I will ask the question because I do not know the answer.........Is the platoon system really not effective this year for Highlands?

I watched the Cooper game and Cooper was gassed at the half (own Coach said so) and I expect Highlands to bounce back in the second half. But it did not happen.

 

Birds handle the Camels just fine. And while Camels are not a great team they are not a pushover.

 

I'm not sure what happened in the Scott Co game. But maybe that is biased by watching them get hammered at Elder.

 

And with Ryle they seemed to just not get over the hump from playing behind most of the game.

 

So is the two platoon system something that will show improvement over time and is needed for the playoff run? Or is it simply not feasible with this team?

 

I will ask these questions and based upon your answers will attempt to answer yours. What makes the platoon system effective? What is the most needed thing to make it effective?

 

To clear something up about the Ryle game, Highlands was not playing from behind most of the game were they? My recollection is that Highlands led 3-0, then 10-7 and it was 17 to 17 at half. All of this with a fumble at the 2 and failure to hold the edge on a 4th down play that resulted in a touchdown. That is a potential 14 point swing, but irregardless the game is tied at the half. Ryle converts a FG in quarter number 3 to go up 20-17 while Highlands runs a grand total of 6 offensive plays in the quarter. So for 3 quarters of the game, it is a tight battle and once behind by 2 scores desperation sets in.

Believe that Highlands will be broadcasting in their usual spot. Audio only I do believe, but not 100% sure.

I keep hearing this about St X. Is this "average" tag just because they aren't "elite" like they usually are or are they really "average" in 6A this year? I think the "average" gets thrown around a little loosely when really good teams just aren't really good for one year. Do they not still beat 85% or more of the state this year?

It's all relative...average by X standards is what some teams are striving for once every four years. But after seeing this team in person and a replays of previous games, I would say yes this X team is average by X and 6A comparison. They have a dynamic QB, but what they are missing is that explosive skill player to take some of the pressure off the QB. The OL looks decent, will get a better indication over the next few weeks.

 

The defense, which was very good last year is an area of concern for me as the year progresses. A lot of cover 4 looks in the secondary...bend, but don't break mentality. LBer Logan Butler is the star of this unit, but outside of him and don't see how they are going to match up with Male and T if they are unwilling to dial up some pressure to help their secondary a little bit. I attended the BG game and the X defense was opportunistic, but BG was able to move the ball on them, so while the score looked ugly, X didn't exactly dominated on the defensive side of the ball.

@RCC9, to answer your question, X is average by X standards. It could be argued they have been average the last handful of years too.

So what does X do on offense and defense? I am assuming since the QB is one of the leading rushers that he is a big cog. Do they throw it much? Seems like I read that the percentage is low and that there are some picks, but do not think that he even threw the ball that often.

St.X has their backups in by the third quarter. Highlands doesn't have the athletes they used to have.
