You tell me this then, how many other offers did he have? They weren't beating down his door and the fact that you don't see the connection and think it didn't have anything to do with him getting an offer is just naive on your part or you're trying to do your best to deny the fact of what the situation is.

 

If he had any other offers he wouldn't have jumped and signed the first offer sent his way that early the best thing he did was accept the offer before the season started.

I do not know if the "connection" had anything to do with it and my guess is neither do you. What I do know is that D1 programs have 85 scholarships, which may sound like a lot, but we know that when schools are penalized and lose just a few it can have a significant impact; therefore, to think that a school would give a kid a scholarship based upon a personal relationship is a little hard for me to believe and doesn't make rational sense. Furthermore my guess is that at that level all full scholarships are determined by the head coach or by consensus of the staff, rather than allow a rogue assistant offering money to those he has personal ties to.

 

Whether Austin plays QB or some other position in college, the school is getting a very good athlete, with excellent size, from a good family.

May be wrong here, but I think Hoge only had one D1 offer last year. At least until late in the season. I may be mistaken there. But I think that was the case.

Let's all be honest with ourselves....it's just like landing a job. It's who ya know. I'm sure Austin performed well in drills for the coaches but to say the Guigduli ties didn't play a part is just being naive. The Highlands reputation goes a long way. Good for Austin! Hope he excels at CMU.

 

As far as Hoge, well I think Beau can play at BYU because he works his butt off, has God given talent and loves the game. He also studies the ga me like no other college freshman I'm sure. But I also think Merrill probably pulled see strings to get him in front of the coaches at BYU. That is awesome and I encourage everyone to leverage who ya know. It is the way this world goes around.

I have the same opinion as TDY. The Birds will play much better tonight. A win is definitely not out of the question.

 

This is week 2 of a tough 3 week stretch against very good 6A competition. Adjustments being made. Team getting better. Looking for improvement, not perfection.

My point is that it's possible to go D1 with only one D1 offer. Happens all the time in all sports.

 

It sure does, but with the circumstances surrounding this instance it makes it hard to believe that the Highlands connection didn't play a huge part in it.

Here is the big difference in the two.

 

Hoge as we all agree and figured going into the season would be an absolute stud at the position. He had interest before the season already yet still wasn't varsity starter until last year. He did what we all thought he would once handed the reigns and was a big reason why everyone knew he'd get offers.

 

Hergott on the other hand had a ton of question marks about his ability going into this season. So much so that many HHS fans after last season had their doubts he would even be the starter. It wasn't a secret. He goes to a camp at C Michigan where a former HHS alum and recruiting coach offers him before even seeing any film as a varsity QB and before his first start as varsity QB. Huge difference between Hoge and Hergott.

 

Again, I wish him the best but no one will convince me if it wasn't for the connection to HHS he would have a DI offer right now.

The better question might be what all of this jibberish has to do with the game tonight between Highlands and Louisville St. Xavier. There are changes that have been made, the question is will they be impactful or will others still need to be made?

Do not misunderstand what I said. This was all in response to someone who doesn't this team is as down as others believe. It was in response to his post talking about all the great players on this team including their DI QB.

 

That's all it is. This HHS team is down and may be a lot of years since this down. That's where this QB stuff came from. I wish him all the luck in the world and hope he has a great college career.
